Default Need a value. Quick! 1931 barn find.....

I'm in my 1930 coupe at a gas station today and an 83 year old man says he has one right down the road he would sale. Which is minutes from my house. Crazy. What do you think it's worth. It's a 1931 and hasn't ran in 3 years been parked a long time. He says he wants $7500 not a dime less and wants to know tomorrow. I felt this was a little high. What does The Barn think?

4,500.00 the most. I would walk away for 7,500.00. But that's my opinion

It would sell for that price here in a short time.it may be a whole different ball game in your part of the country. It looks a little crusty along the bottom, but when the local A guys got done picking it apart a street rodder would just fork over the money and haul it off.As an A guy here put it,while us A guys are picking out everything wrong, telling the owner what it needs, the rod guy is just standing there waiting for us to get done with the jibber jabber so he can fork over his money.Your neck of the woods may be completely different.

If that started , drove and stopped, it would get double that asking price here in OZ.

Car needs everything! Your looking at well over $15k or more to get it decent. That's about $23k plus. Do you want a coupe for 23k?

Take a good look inside the gas tank I see a metal inline fuel filter..
I would want to hear it run and feel it drive before forking over anything
Most likely it's a mess mechanically and not worth it
it looks like a carport find not a barn find

I agree with Vince, but also think Keith is right that on ebay it will fetch the price by a rod guy.

I wouldn't be concerned with what a rod guy would pay. That doesn't make the car worth more, particularly, if you intend to keep it original. The value ratio is not equal, in my opinion.

I would also be suspicious of why the seller wants an answer in 24 hours. My guess would be, he's going to see if you bite at the highest price he's asked for the car so far.Try to be rational.

That looks like a Hot Rod body, and some running gear and fenders that will show up on eBay an hour after they are photographed. Bob

$3500-4000. Even that's a stretch. those cars are not as "hot" as they used to be -especially if they don't run and drive. Don't be afraid to walk away.

This might be a strange comment fro a country that doesn't have titles for cars - no such thing but "Does it have a title??"
The only way I learned such a thing existed was when I was informed by a helpful gent that I should never buy a car without one.
It seems to me that it would be worth more with a title but I don't really understand your system.

I called several friends for advice from both sides. Stock guy and hot rod builders. As already stated the stock guy didn't act like it was much of a deal and I feel the same. I could see $5K. Now the other buddies who run hot rod shops didn't even mention the rust and one is going with me tomorrow to make an offer. He has already stated he is bringing cash if I pass. The guy did say he had the title. He didn't put a dead line on me but I said I would be back tomorrow. He spoke very much that his health was very bad ( he had a powered wheel chair and I could see and hear he was in pain to stand). I offered to help him but he wouldn't let me. I get it.

This coupe is worth $3K-$4K and not a penny more. The cost to have a quality engine rebuild is $6500-$7000. I am having one done as I write this reply. The sheet metal looks like it is in decent condition such that you wouldn't have to buy new or replacements parts. The car is definitely worth restoring but not worth $7500.

I can just about smell the huge mouse nest under the seat from here-but who says the engine needs a $6500 rebuild? On my '30 Fordor that had been sitting 30+ years, the engine exterior looked just about like this one-but it was in good condition inside-I just got it on the stand, cleaned it out well, reground the valves by hand, and checked the bearing clearances-it runs fine, and it sure didn't cost anything in that neighborhood. Just last week I saw the result of a hot rodder getting a '28-'29 Coupe-he only took the body, and sold the running, very original chassis to a friend of mine-he didn't even take the original Motometer off the radiator.

I'm not one of these "the cost to restore is more then it's worth" guys. Unless you get the steal of the century, no model A will sell for what you have in it right away.

But with that, no, walk away.

A) You already have one. So if you don't need something to do to keep you busy you don't, why?
B) Why are there two ammeters on the seat?
C) Why is the instrument panel apart?
D) Yea, it ran when I parked it!
E) Lot of panel replacement.
F) and so on.

He wants an emotional sale, that is why he says 24 hours. He does not want you to think about it or do any research (guess he does not know about us). What will happen in 25 hours?

The Gas Monkey crooks sold one in much better shape for the same money.

Here in va it would bring 7500.00....then remove the fenders, hood and wipe her down with wd-40.
Get it to run/drive around the block. Price it at 10,995 or a little more at it will sell quickly.
You can see this was a nice car at some time.70's restoration?

A lot in price and real market value depends upon where these things are located. Here is the heavily populated northeast, stuff usually sells for more than in the middle of the country.

And too . . . 'Hard Cash" does really talk loudly. As crass at it might be, carefully un-pocketing a wad of tasty Ben Franklin hundred dollar notes has quickly dislodged many "firm prices". Never be afraid to walk away! Also too . . . "he who speaks LAST looses the better deal." Make the real offer and then remain silent. At least that's what I was taught long ago by a couple of pro antique / junk dealers. Most times the procedure worked.

eBay prices mean nothing unless it is a completed sale where reserve was met. They can ask anything they want, but the important price is what did it sell for?

What a pile of mis-matched bits and pieces. LHD steering column but a RHD fuel tank. It's a free country - he can ask what he likes!!

Looks like $2500 - $3500 on my screen. Lots of rust, poorly restored previously, and then left sitting outside. I probably would look for a nicer example if I wanted a coupe. It just needs too much work to make economic sense to me.

While there are no detailed pictures, it does not seem to have the rot that the one we are talking about has on it.

So like someone else asked, what happened after 25 hours?
Did you ask that question?
The price is firm but you only get 24 hours to act? _____

Maybe the guy is tired of tire kickers? I dont blame him.
I sold 4 cars on ebay in the last month and everyone went MIA.

and of course ebay doesnt care, as long as they get your listing money...........

This Coupe appears to be an older cosmetic restoration that has decayed substantially. My guess is that it is not running, so a price in the range of $2000 to $3000 is fair. If it runs and you could test drive it, I would consider another $1000.

This is how I just got my second Model T -a rodder just wanted the coupe body, so i bought a complete chassis with engine and fenders. It will likely be a speedster eventually.

I've already told the rodder if the drive train was going to be ditched that I wanted it.

Here is the home. Under the carport is the Model A. I drove past again today. I'd like to get that car back on the road.

You can't tell but behind this house is another house about 15ft from the back of this one. The roof on it is falling in and on the half opened door written twice in permanent marker was "no truss passing"

Get $4,000 in $100 dollar bills and show him the cash and tell him that's your best offer...

There are still a lot of people around here that get very insulted if you seem to think a wad of cash will impress them or change their minds.I don't get insulted,I just say,no thanks, not enough.I just saw the owner of a salvage yard toss somebody out for making an offer of half the asking price. It was an old plow truck, and the guy looking at it was trying to tell the owner that it was springtime and the truck was only worth half what he was asking.I've never been moved by the sight of a roll of money,it's just moldy old paper.I've had a lot of people wave it around thinking that the sight of it would excite me into dropping my price,It hasn't worked yet.

A little perspective:
Paid $3500, no interior, no brakes, engine did not run but rotated, no electrical, missing glass, no title, car full of trash up to the window sills ...

What I found: Very little surface rust, no major cancer. Engine freshly re-built (very early '60's) but never ran more than a few minutes. All new brakes, but never hooked up. Body was removed and the frame cleaned and painted, new roof and wood (very early '60's), New clutch, clean gas tank, rebuilt tranny, (all very early '60's)

PO did a lot of work his Family did not know about, PO never finished it, stopping in 62-63...and there it sat for the next 53 years...waiting for me.

Sometimes you have to take the gamble, but don't bet the rent money and hit on 18.

That would be a much better deal than paying $7500 for the other one that needs a lot of work.

The bare-bones body previously mentioned sold on eBay for $5200. There were 6 different bidders who bid more than $4000.

This is the one thing I predict the most, and the one thing I am right about the most. All the picking apart, making offers, pointing out how much it needs, means nothing. The rodders will step up and buy it.I can only speak for my little section of country, but they have clobbered most chances of old car guys getting a bargain. These are two A's that I tried to save from rodding,I bought both,at different times, hoping to keep them original. The coupe was solid and absolutely rust free.It had a Sears reman engine sitting in it,but was never hooked up.The sedan was a solid nice running car,but nothing special.I sold each car to rodders, each one brought $8000.Just what I had paid to save them. The sedan was the best deal, the buyer gave the new LeBaron interior and wheels/tires back to me.I'm supposed to get the engine too.

There are plenty out there in better condition for equal or better money with your name on it.

I still believe you would have made a mistake by buying that specific car at that price.
