Re: Reatoation of 1932 Ford Steering Wheel?
There have been several post here on the barn about steering wheel repairs and related products to do so (from bondo, JB weld, etc etc)......with that said I'm always leery of "only" fixing certain sections of an already deteriorating material as once you fix around that it is now subject to the same issues you just fixed....For our 32, we located a (I think it was Drake) repro wheel he did several years ago.....As for repairing yours IMO if its not a complete encapsulation of the entire wheel to "Stabilize it I am not a big fan of spot repairs!!!! If you attempt to fix your self I would look to a product called Devcon Plastic Steel....it also is available with different media mixed into it...you can get Aluminium, ceramic, Stainless, Titanium. Not sure of the shrinkage of it but I sold it in the industrial market to Tropicana to repair SS pump shafts and it was also machinable.

Re: Reatoation of 1932 Ford Steering Wheel?
I'm not sure if anyone still uses any hard rubber materials that were used back then but there a several around the country that use the tempering process on urethane to recast.
If a wheel isn't cracked all over but just at the edges of the spokes, the PC7 epoxy putty works well on them then repaint with black urethane. The cracked areas have to be V'd out to get the filler in there but it can be worth the effort depending on condition. |
