Default New '40 Spedo, Need Service?

Does a new in box spedometer need service before installation? The box was the original Stewart Warner that just crumbled when I handle it. Guess I'll keep the box pieces for reference. The spedo is for a V8 and my current project is a Deluxe. This kind of Spedo was more popular for modified car than the Deluxe and I prefer the V8 style, but mostly just need to get the car on the road. I'm not used to servicing anything but these cars and parts are getting damn old. Thanks: Fred A

I recently bought a NOS Stewart Warner speedo for my Ranch wagon from Rusty at Speedometer Service in Colorado Springs. He said it had been on the shelf for a while so he checked it out/went through it before shipping it to me. Good guy to deal with. e1956v on the HAMB. Worth a phone call IMO.

We here in the SF valley have two instrument shops closer than a good post office. One does custom work used by old car guys. Thanks for the thought on source however but was wondering if being new, the expense might not be needed. Good Luck: Fred A

I would think that any lube in it has dried/hardened up.
Might be worth a few bucks to have it serviced before installing it. JMO

Like the box it came in Paul, dried out lube seems quite likely. I should look at the other four gages which are new in much nicer boxes. I'm probably overly impressed with the box thing and since they are not correct with my car, get over it for now. Thanks: Fred A
