Default Rear transmission support T-bolts B-5098

Need to know the size of the T-bolts and nuts holding the rear transmission support to the torque tube. The 4 special bolts in my transmission have some damaged threads and I was trying to rethread them for reassembly. I thought they are 7/16 bolts but when I try using my 7/16 dies they don't fit (neither do the next smaller or next larger sizes). The corresponding castle nuts don't fit with my 7/16 tap either. The nuts appear to have an internal diameter that is a bit tapered? Not sure. Anyone knows what die I need to use? Thank you for any suggestions. Manuel

Looks like 7/16-20 if I'm looking at the correct part. Do you have a Green Book? You can download a free version or purchase a CD with it and a lot of other literature. I have the download version, the CD and several hard copiers.

Are you using a 7/16-14 or 7/16-20?

I used 7/16-20 (fine thread). Thanks for pointing to the right page of the Green Book. I was looking under "transmission" and could not find it because it is under "chassis". This book is frequently confusing to me. Regardless of that, my 7/16-20 seems too tight. But now I feel reassured I can apply lots of force with no concern of modifying the thread. Will try again.

Are you sure of the quality of the die?

Good point. No, I am not. The brand is Performance Tools and is a set I got about 3 years ago from a general auto parts store in the US. Of course, made in China. But this is probably the first time I need to use the 7/16 die which is not a common one. I had used quite a lot the other more common smaller sizes and it worked OK. Thanks for your thoughtful comments JSeery!

Maybe the China made die is their equivalent of 7/16 x 20 in metric. They make shit like that. I would not force that die on your bolts. Find another die or check out your bolts with a micrometer and thread gauge. Your local bolt shop would have a 7/16 x 20 bolt and nut for you to do a comparison. Regards, Kevin.

Those bolts seem to be stressed a fair amount. We've seen the bolts slightly stretched, slightly bent, and of course, with thread damage. The steel is good Ford steel so they may be restorable unless the damages are too great.

Mac has a point there. Bolts under high torque load and/or high tension load do have a tendency to get stretched over time. This makes them tight on the nut. Some folks don't know there own strength when they torque stuff up plus the torque tube bell can get some good loads on it when rocking the vehicle to get out of a mud puddle. I've seen a lot of transmission and drive train breakages from folks getting stuck in the mud or sand.

Yes Mac VP, thank you, I now realize that is the problem. Looking carefully at the thread it is streched in all 4 bolts and is causing the poor fit with the nut and the die. Will get a new die and try again.

By the way, this is the final step of a complete transmission rebuild of my 33 model B. I have followed Mac's book line by line. Got all NOS parts in it and patiently checked all fits, clearences, etc to the specifications provided in his book. Got lots of photos and will post shortly (after I fix these ugly looking T bolts).

Anyway to grind the head on a conventional bolt to work as a temporary fix? VanPelt has originals and repo.

Manuel,

We got NOS ones if you cannot remedy your issue.

Those bolts look a little like wheel studs. Are they splined to drive into like a wheel hub? 7/16-20 is a wheel stud size.

ONE thing to do is check the fit of the bolts in the bore of the trans mount AND also the u/joint bell that fits over them,
It took years and two owners to get the vibration out of the drive line on our 33,
Turned out these bolts and holes were worn and NOT holding the U/loint bell concentric with the gearbox output shaft,
do a search,I put a detailed fix for it on the forum a while back. under driveline vibration

Thanks guys, I have taken notice of all your suggestions. Today spent 3 hrs visiting tool sellers looking for a good quality die but all have only cheap chinese brands. Got two more places to check tomorrow.

If not able to fix these bolts I will visit my friend at his machine shop and fabricate bolts similar to what Lawrie did as shown in his post back in 2014

https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...ght=drive+line

Doing it myself is way beyond my abilities and tools but got the helper who will be able to follow Lawrie's suggestions.

Wheel stud should be 1/2 X 20 tpi . may be that is why 7/16 X 20 tpi Tap wouldn't fit ??? Farmers fix . JMHO

OK, I fixed them! As JSeery suggested, the problem was a lousy quality die. Got a new one today that seems pretty solid and in no time rethreaded all 4 bolts. They look pretty good afterwards and I think will be able to complete the transmission work likely in the next few days. I am learning the lesson of tool quality very fast.
