Re: 40 rear axles
The two axles and spider gears need to match up. Nothing else.
The rear in my avatar is made up with a 1946 center section, 1946 Merc ring and pinion, 1936 bells, and I don't remember what axles and spider gears. I put 1936 carrier bearings on the Merc gear carrier. I set the preload and backlash with one set of gaskets My point is that it's pretty amazing how many different parts can go together correctly. Re: 40 rear axles
All axle shafts from '35 to '41 are 32.85" in length, and will work in any of those axle housings. Tooth count was 18 up till 1939, when tooth count changed to 16. Again, will work in any year from '35 till '41, but will need to be in matching pairs and with corresponding spider gear.

Re: 40 rear axles
ford38v8 is correct the 35-38 axle is the same length as the 40 but the machined gear end of the axle that engages the spiders is different. Early axles have 18 teeth,39-41 16. The correct 4 spiders are 12 or 11 depending on the axle used. As long as you keep the right spiders with the correct axles you can exchange 35-38 and 39-41 axles in the banjos in sets.
