Default 59A Flatty. A good candidate for rebuild? It's full of sludge!

Hello! Welcome to Mart's Garage. In this week's video I turn my attention to the first of my flathead stash. Lets delve into this old 59A flathead and see if it is suitable for rebuild.
People mention use of detergent and non detergent oils. From what I saw in this motor it lead me to form some opinions on that score.
So sit back and chill while I get elbows deep in this dirty old flatty.
Mart.

"A bit of life in the old girl yet."

Added: Curiously clean piston top when it came out?

Most often seen when water has entered the combustion chamber. It was an old time method to get rid of carbon if done on purpose.

No, lads, that was after a quick go around with a wire brush.

Yes, it did seem extra clean.

Hi Mart.. I think you've got a good motor there. It probably hasn't had a oil change for decades decades, and they are a great sludge making machine probably being run with no air cleaner and no pcv valve and with lotsa blow by. I think these fathead engines make more goo than a paper hangers paste pot.

That crack or casting mark needs investigating. Noticed also no frost plugs in the sump pan rail.

That sump may have had its baffles removed to accommodate a different model oil pump.
Nice motor.

Regards Kevin

Sludge is just a cheap, low-grade version of Cosmoline.

Probably easier to clean off as well.

You make great videos Mart.

This one makes me wanna dig into the '47 V8 that sits in my garage to see what hides inside.

Mart, Love your videos. In the day, we would've put it back together after a real sloshing with kerosine or "something". Dropped it into "the vehicle", mixed 50/50 30w oil & kerosine and srove it till it got hot. Drained it, repeat. Drained it, new oil of choice and drove on. worked on a few...blew 1 up. Back then you could go to the local "yard" & get another. Cheers

Sludge in these engines is often caused by water leaking from a bad gasket or a cracked block. I got a bucket full of old black sludge out of a couple of these. Both were cracked. One crack was in the lifer chamber and went from one lifter bore clear across to the other side and ended next to another bore. That black goo is a mess to try to clean up.

When I was in high school shop class upper classmen would catch a junior bent over a fender and smear black goo in both his ears.
That was nothing compared to their initation.
