Default How does this door stuff come apart?

Trying to get this door latching/locking mechanism out of my '35 pickup. How does this thing come apart and what is this hole in the door edge for? That little nub you see is connected to the door lock but I can't tell what it does.

Thanks,
Heard

That's the setscrew that holds the lock in place. They were slotted, brittle, and prone to rusting in place. As far as I know, nobody has found one in operable condition. Heat can break the rust, and you'll need a way to grip it to turn, so you might try wire welding a small nut onto the end of it. Don't get rough with it, as it just threads into sheet metal.

If it is like my 41 pickup, it is a set screw that holds the lock in place. There is a tubular part, with a 10-32 unf threaded grubscrew up the middle. Mine had an allen hex on the end but I understand some have a slotted end.

I ended up having to use heat to get the tube red hot before I had a chance of loosening it. I Drilled it out and knocked a torx bit into the remnants to get it to turn.

It was a hell of a job, best of luck.

Mart.

I used Kroil &/or pb blaster on the slotted set screws in my '35 passenger car door. Replaced original screws with stainless allen/hex head set screws. Heat would probably have worked well if I wasen't concerned about screwing up original paint.

John, a wire welder would have localized the heat.

Not familiar with the pickups, but if they're anything like the cars of that year they can be a royal pain in the butt to get out. Even after the set screw is out the lock assembly itself often/usually can be very hard to get out of the cylinder it slides into. Here's a picture of the car setup I saved from a similar thread. Good Luck.

Not always a "Horror Story". The one in my 52 F-1 came right out. I believe I ended up using a torx driver to get it out. Hope that is what your experience will be. Chap
