Motor and trans installed today

My friend and I put the trans and motor back in today, happy day after 7 years waiting for the paint job. Question number one, is it possible to install the radiator then the grill assembly or reverse? Seems that the bolts that hold the fenders are hard to get at with the radiator in. Second question, looking for GL4 140wt trans gear oil and found Valvoline 75W-140. label said its GL4 but worried about leaking, found Sta-lube 140wt on Amazon but trying to get local. Thanks in advance for the help and suggestions.

It depends on the driving conditions. If you are only going to drive it in hot weather, then 140 SAE viscosity would be ok. But in cooler / cold weather you would want the 75W. That is what is nice about the multi-viscosity, will work under both conditions. If you end up getting excessive leakage you would be better off address those issues.

live in Michigan, only drive her in the summer months. Our temps range from 60-90...sounds like the 75-140 will be ok. Rebuilt the trans and put new gaskets from VanPelts, hopefully will be ok. Holds two quarts?

Nice 36 Tom, milestones for vehicles are great when they happen and makes all that work worth while. A 36 is on "my next" list if a reasonable model A project does not come along.

I use the multi 75-140 in the 39 and 77 peekups, keep us posted with your project, again nice work there.

Been so long for my car to be in the garage I almost forgot about a few oil leaks! lol...Will go with the 75-140 and see how it goes. Think I remember seeing the 36 trans takes about two quarts? First time on for the new Red's headers too, fit real well even on the steering box side.

You will love the new coated Red's headers. Mine are 20 years old and look like new. Did you polish the intake yourself?

You can install the radiator and then the grille, if you assemble both inner fender sections and the grille as a unit. That way you can access the grille bolts to the inner fenders without the radiator interference. It also allows you to install the welting between the inner fenders and the grille.

38bill, had a guy polish the intake for me, he takes care of the BeCool radiators that are made in Bay City...does excellent work! I do use my purple metal polish from California

19Fordy, that looks great! Always liked that unit, glad it went to a good home. In regards to the trans gear oil, went with the Valvoline 75-140. Two quarts put it right above the side fill hole, is that enough or should the level be higher? Thanks

I fill it up even with the lip of the side fill hole. Check it with your pinky finger. Same with the trans.

Sounds like I have a bit too much oil in the trans, will take some out tomorrow. Thanks to all for the input! More details done today including new fuel hose lines. Used 5/16 fuel injection type for strength. Was going to use some clear tubing but remember my friends here said don't use them! Fire hazard
