Definitive Guide to re-upholstery Model A Interior?
Anyone? I can find lots of resources to help me with restoration of mechanical parts and assemblies; but so far I have not be able to locate a source the guide me through replacement of the interior. Seems like someone along the way would have written it all down and added pictures!
Before you refer me to a Model A Parts house, believe me, they have been great advising me on what to buy... but I be danged if they know how to attach panels and in what order...etc, etc. And, yes I bought those funky looking clips that are supposed to hold the panel in place - but how you hide those clips under the upholstery and align them with the too small of holes in the frame is beyond me. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you |

Re: Definitive Guide to re-upholstery Model A Interior?
On my Tudor, special clips with flat round heads went into keyhole slots in the fiberboard for some of the vertical panels. The clips are inserted from the back side, and the upholstery on the front side is not affected. The inserted clips then press into matching holes in the doors and elsewhere. The rest of the panels are tacked up with instructions on weaving the small nail heads into/under the fabric. I'd say who you buy the upholstery from should be able to guide you, if not they aren't a very good resource.

This topic, -and "engine restoration the correct way" are about the last two uncharted and undocumented topics of the hobby. In the fall of 2016 when I first learned from an insider that LeBaron Bonney was in trouble, I decided to add the upholstery business to my restoration business. The learning curve in doing interiors & trim work correctly has been mind boggling to the point of almost daunting, -and I have been around installing Model-A kits for over 40 years. As you become a study of this particular craft, you realize that the original clips that Ford used are not what vendors supply today. This places many holes in certain panels in different locations. Matter of fact, the methods and supplies that most kit manufacturers offer today are not what Ford used or did. Therefore a book or instructional manual would likely not be of much benefit unless it was written by the manufacturer themselves for installation of their own kit due to the differences. Therefore my advice to you if you are using someone's commercially-made kit is to contact them for their instructions. As far as the 'definitive guide' to what is authentic, Howard & Gretchin Minners, along with Bill Sturm, Marco Tahtaras, and one or two others compiled a collection of proper materials & samples, and then produced 3 booklets that were gifted to MARC, MAFCA, and MAFFI for preservation. These however (-at least as I understand it) are not "how-to" booklets on the methods & procedures for installation, -but just what fabrics & materials were used originally. . . |
