Default 63 f100 dana 44 axle seal

Some sourdes show and outer seal between the axle flange and wheel bearing, others dont. Helpful drivetrain place for me all the correct part numbers for my diff rebuild and wheel bearing stuff, and recommend part number 18731. I can't see how this would fit.

Most early ones have a sealed bearing so the housing seal is mounted inside the axle tube inboard of the wheel bearing. The bearing retainer is all that is outboard of the bearing. I don't know about the later ones for 1963 F100s.

Ford was using both Dana 44 and Ford 9-inch in that time frame. Some parts may interchange but most don't. A person needs to know if the break down is for the Dana 44 rear wheel drive axle. The 4WD axle may be different. If the unit has sealed bearings then it shouldn't need an outer seal. The bearing retainer will generally keep the brake dust out of the axle tube.

Gotcha. Also, you said bearing retainer was outboard of the sealed bearing (yes I have a rear 2wd d44 w/sealed bearings), as in nearer to the wheel. I was pretty sure the retainer went between the bearing and inner/tube seal.

The inboard seal was designed to keep the differential lube from entering the bearing and washing the grease out. Some axle assembly actually design them so the lube will flow out there and lube the bearing but not those that use sealed bearings.

I meant the outer axle retainer that bolts the axle into the tube and holds the bearing in its seat. Sorry for any confusion. There is also a bearing retaining collar and I didn't make that clear.

I've found two different diagrams of d44 axles. This one doesn't not show a seal between the retainer plate and sealed bearing. On another thread regarding the same issue, I've been told there is a seal. A drivetrain specialist (phone call) also referenced the seal and part number.

I've tried to get the seal to seat or sit in or out of the retainer plate but I'm assuming it would go inside of it against the bearing, as there's space in the concave portion of the retainer plate.

I'll get a pic of what I have shortly. unnamed (1).jpg

Last pic is just for reference size of seal. When mocking up prior to putting everything on, seal didn't sit inside cover well. bottom of axle shaft is thicker but I think there was play between the seal and shaft.
