I use the 5000# winch from Harbor Freight. Works well, I have a snatch block but with this winch I don't need it.

I use my Harbor Freight 12K winch daily.
I installed the optional wireless remote control.
You can buy a (1) year extended warranty but you won't need it.

Having a winch completes your trailer set up. For years I used a "come along" but as I got older it became more difficult to do. In any case I seem to use it more to help other people, but when I need it it is ready to go. I keep a "battery tender" to keep the battery ready at all times.

I have a 20' aluminum tilt trailer and I installed a cross bed tool box for a full size pickup. I installed a Warn 8000 winch INSIDE the box with a remote control. Since I have a battery for the hydraulic pump, I used an HD connector to power the winch and I also set up some jumper cables with the same connector. I like the idea that the winch is out of the weather and that I have secure storage for tools and stuff. I also carry a turning block to get some of those hard to extract barn finds.

Had a disabled Friend, running a small VW shop. With a series of guide pulleys, he could snatch a car from his parking lot with his remote controlled winch, while he steered the car!

I use a 2 speed hand crank winch, like what many boat trailers use.
I can crank a 3600 pound car on quicker than my friend can with his electric winch.
If you go with the electric winch, the remote switch is handy to have.

If a person installs a large tool box on the front of the trailer to put the electric winch in, what do you use for power if you also do not have a battery in the box? Will a set of battery jumper cables work or is there some other ideas? Could I just plug it into my trailer brake plug on my truck(with correct plug)?

I would guess that the winch will draw more current than the relay or fuse on the other end of the trailer plug can handle. The wire connecting power to my winch is #4 and carries quite a bit of current...

I use a separate battery right next to the winch to keep the leads short...

I agree with Frank. It is best to have a separate battery on the front of the trailer to operate the winch, then run a small wire from the tow vehicle to the trailer battery to keep it charged while driving. This same battery can be used for youy electric brakes emergency battery.

Sounds like a good idea for this battery. I do have a little battery on my trailer for the emergency breaks but I don't think it will do it for a winch. But the idea of putting a metal box up in front of the trailer which would have the winch and it's battery along with other stuff may be a good idea.
I don't use my trailer very often so guess I would have to take the battery out and put in the shop with a trickle charge on it.

Thanks guys for info.

I installed a battery as tom mentioned to run the winch. ..i also left the little battery in place and hooked up...
I mounted it inside one of my base cabinents and ran the wiring to the main trailer junction box

Here's a picture of my one speed hand winch on my engine lift, and the two speed on my car trailer. I haven't used the trailer for several years, except to store things on.
The nice thing about the hand winch is they are quick, easy, and you never have to worry about power, unless you have a broken arm.

If you use a standard 7 wire trailer plug and if it is wired standard, there is a 12V lead there to keep your winch battery charged...

I have a flat trailer with 4 foot ramps at axle height, and a boat type crank similar to Tom's. The setup is adequate for me and has never failed me. Don't need to charge it up either. To align the vehicle I just pull forward a few feet with the front axle on the trailer if I didn't do a very good job spotting the trailer. This trailer is second hand and I can't claim the design.

Thanks for all of the tips fella, Dick you just answered the question i was gonna ask about. Tom i have a winch which uses a removable hand crank and you can use a battery operated drill with socket to operate it giving you an electric winch if you desire.

I have a hydraulic tilt trailer I use for hauling everything from tractors to Model A's with a Ramsey 8000 lb winch mounted on the front of the tilt bed. I have a battery mounted beside the winch that has nothing connected to the hyd. pump battery but have always wondered where or how to connect up electrically so I don't have to keep charging the winch battery. In the picture Dick Stienkamp shows would you connect to auxiliary (orange) wire and make sure of a good ground or am I thinking right?
