I need Help !
O.K. Folks - what the heck is the trick to installing the brake shoe spring clips on '46 - '48 shoes ? One clip holds each shoe centered. This is on a Model A converted to juice.
Appreciate some guidance, please ! Last edited by stevests; 08-15-2022 at 07:08 PM. Reason: additional info |

Having very little context to go on, I suspect the answer to your question is to use one of the tools pictured in this google search: https://www.google.com/search?q=drum...w=1360&bih=594

Re: I need Help !
I'm a T guy helping a buddy get his A back together. I own most of the old school brake tools but I'm not familiar with this type of clip - appears to need a lever type tool but not much room to pry ! I'll get a photo posted tomorrow.

Not sure if you have early or late brakes but this video should help.

I'm confused, are you trying to remove them for some reason or install them? Unless there's a problem with them they don't need to be removed to either remove or install the shoes - once the top spring between the shoes is removed the shoes will just slide out of the clips you're dealing with. The clips just snap into place and can be tough to get out - especially if there's any corrosion. Unless there's a problem with them leave them be. |

Re: I need Help !
Leave them in place or put them back in place if they fall out as usual. Wrap a bungee cord around the shoes once they are anchored at the bottom, you can pull them back enough to slip under the clips when they are pried up. Then after making sure the wheel cyls notches are on the shoes install the retract spring.
Thought more guys would understand the question; this being the Early V/8 Forum. |

Re: I need Help !
Yes, Rich B has it. They just set in place and once everything is assembled up the shoe stops them popping out and they locate the shoe. Sort of a mutual support thing going on.

Re: I need Help !
Use grease to hold the clip on the back plate then install each shoe separately. Then remove any excess grease.

Re: I need Help !
Thanks fellas ! This car sat quite a number of years and I'm servicing the brakes including new wheel cylinders, etc. Due to the transverse rear spring, the rear backing plates are installed upside down so the wheel cylinder is located at the bottom so the shoe pivot anchor is on top. They are quite a strong clip so I'll attempt to manipulate them into position - thought perhaps there was a tool for installation. From appearance & what I've learned here and some catalogs, they're the later shoes & adjusters.
Thanks for the video link - I understand the concept just these are upside down ! Last edited by stevests; 08-16-2022 at 10:02 AM. Reason: additional info |

Re: I need Help !
With these upside down type of installations you will probably find them difficult to bleed well - lots of threads, suggestions, etc. posted on the Model A Forum.

Re: I need Help !
I've seen quite a bit of information regarding the upside down configuration - installed speed bleeders so we'll see how it goes !
Also - got the clips installed - a bit challenging as they surely didn't "just slide on the shoe" like the video - had to hold the shoe out to the edge of the backing plate then manipulate a small flat blade screw driver to "wedge" open the clip and slide the shoe under - must be a easier way to reassemble ? Re: I need Help !
Video is of a guy putting together '39-'41 brakes; those shoes just slide into the hold-downs.
I lost track of how many times he swung those shoes into place; could have used a bungee cord as his third hand. Just saying. Just crack the line when bleeding; a little messier; but gets the air out more than the bleeder. |
