Default Model A Ford 7 Tooth Steering Box Oil Capacity

I have a 7 tooth steering column. Just rebuilt it. Installed in car. Went to fill it with 600W oil and the Les Andrew’s book and anywhere else I read online says it takes 7 and 3/4 ounces. It only took 4 and 1/2 ounces and is full to the plug. Clean box, just rebuilt, no old grease or anything in there. Am I missing something here?

Yes I did that as I was filling. Front wheels off ground, turning steering wheel back and forth from stop to stop. Still only took that much. About 4 and 1/2 ounces.

600W is thick, goopy stuff. Drive it a bit and check your level frequently. You may have an internal bubble that just needs time to clear. Half full for a short period of time should not be fatal.

It’s a traditional hot rod/restoration I’m building, so won’t be driving for a while… but that theory makes some sense and is defiantly possible. Hmmm.
