As an aside, I will say that I always have the 'spark arrester' screen inside my gas tank, except when filling the tank with gas. And yes, it is a bitch to struggle to remove it, set it aside, fill my tank, and then re-install the screen. And I have been filling my tank this way for over 50 years.
But for me, it IS worth the hassle.

I also use a felt-lined canvas apron 'bib' to cover the top of the cowl when filling the tank. There inevitably seems to be a Murphy Law in effect that says odds are that there WILL be a few errant drops that find it their 'duty' to drip on the cowl top.

It should be mentioned, that the issue is that today's modern high volume pumps send gas into the tank FASTER than the gas can be digested into the tank, when one of the 'spark arrestor' screens is used - the screen acts as a "restrictor", inhibiting the fast-moving flow of the incoming gas. Without the restriction of the screen, the incoming gas can easily be accommodated.

I acquired a 'gas neck extension' that 700 RPM suggested and it works great. I took my screen out because, today's repops are snap in and my tank has threads that, BTW, have worn down so much, no screw type screen would work. I put a towel bib around the mouth opening and I use a dip stick marked with gals up to ten telling me how many gals I need....after saying all of that, I have been stupid enough to overfill it twice. Won't ever happen again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DougVieyra - My question to you would be is: Why don't you just take out the "spark arrester" screen and leave it out. I feel you are defeating the purpose for the screen by taking it out while refueling. Don't know how your pump handles are in CA but where I live I most pumps don't have the option of putting the pump handle in the tank and setting the little are to keep it running while not holding the handle. So I just pull the handle accordingly to how much the tank can take.

AND - I like the historical accuracy of the device, as included in the original design of the Ford Model A.

and that's the exact original reason why I acquired a screen in the first place, to stop any sloshing around but....over filling it sort of defeats that purpose!!!!!

Newbie questions - I've only had my A since May. What does this screen look like and how do I know if I have one?? I don't see anything when I look into the tank.
I haven't even taken my car to the gas station pump yet. I've been using a 2.5 gallon plastic gas can with a plastic funnel to occasionally put gas into the tank this summer. Is this a safe method or should I worry about static electricity?

There were several types...depends on your gas tank.

Thanks much for the info. Mine would have been the tab kind. Apparently the repro's (Sndyers/ Mike's) don't have the tabs attached - so how would this be installed now if I were to buy one?

No it does NOT!! The magnet doesn't mooove around either.

Seems that they do;
"Won't work on the threaded version of this screen, only the tab version. Due to tab variations you will have to bend the tabs in this once you get it."
