'36 Ford p/u horn

Has anyone taken apart a '36 Ford pickup horn? How can I tell if its a 6v or 12v? And in order to get to the wires internally, do I need to drill out the 4 rivetes? Thank you for your help.

Remind me where are the rivets? I don't remember any. What manufacturer and model is the horn. I believe it is marked on the top cover.

The rivetes are located under the crown (round part). So, there are 4 rivetes and 2 empty holes for the bracket. I bought USED at a swap meet. It had been powder coated black and I don't see any name on it.

I believe the 36 pickup horn has a dome shaped cover on top covering the horn mechanism that is held on by a single screw on the center top of the dome. Removing the dome should allow easy access to the wiring. Perhaps a picture of your horn would help.

nelsb01...The horn pictured does not appear to be a pickup horn. The pickup horn is somewhat "J" shaped with the dome cover on top of the horn mechanism and a "J" shaped projector below. The internal mechanism appears to be the same as the one in your picture. The horn pictured appears to be linear.

So, I'm not sure I need to remove these rivetes. Will the top screw remove the dome piece? If so, maybe its on there real tight. And does anyone know if its 6v or 12v?

The gubbins are the same for all horns. Upon purchase, my '36 pickup horn didn't beep, so I bought a pair of '46, '47, '48 long-trumpet horn(s). EXACTLY the same. (cars have two horns, adjust them for your desired harmonic 'blare'.

Do the same for your '36 pickup; two horns. I did; bought a non-working '36-style

on line, for very little, and that's when I bought the '46,'7,'8 long-trumpet horn(s), online

and realized that the gubbins are all the same! (so now I had two working '36-style horns.

( while you're at it, disassemble the '36 horns. . . . . .

. . . . . to paint the faded 'elbow' with gloss-black or semi-gloss black INSIDE! the elbow tube, (and outside of course).

The inside of the elbow tube becomes rusty over the years from 'ingesting' incoming

rain through the screen,(Then the rusty rainwater flows out the elbow tube through

the screen thus 'staining' the screen and the chrome trumpet.

(the exact same screen is a common pattern found today at hdwe stores, I realized. So, cut a new screen out of your stock-screen purchase using the old screen as a pattern. The screen simply snaps in/snaps out.

Now, the chrome trumpet is spot-welded on in 3 spots. 'Remove' the spotwelds from the inside of the elbow tube, leaving the outside spotwelds in place. You will then realize that the chrome trumpet fits tight as a glove into the elbow tube. So, drill out the BOTTOM spotweld and replace with a teeny metal screw. (even if the metal screw would 'fall out' over the years, the tight-tight fit of the chrome trumpet into the elbow tube, would hold for years! EASY FIX. (no one knows the diff, the bottom metal screw is not seen.

( chrome your windshield surround. That & the two horns will set it apart from any other. You'll have people asking, "Is that a deluxe?) Mine was a rare FoMoCo dual-spare,w/orig chromed windshield surround(not rechromed) demonstrater(still on the road).

Well, I got the horn apart. Still don't know if its a 6v or 12v. Any ideas?
Here is a picture of the inside. And I thought it would only have one wire. Why 2 wires?

As that's an original ford horn so it will be 6Vs.
One wire is the power feed witch is live all the time & the other is the earth. The Horn button earths the horn to make it work.

Yes one wire is negative & the other is to the horn button which earths it to make it work.
The wires can connect either way as far as I can remember.

The horns are sturdy bits. Apply 6 volts. Is it loud? Now apply 12 volts. Is it REALLY LOUD? If yes, it is a 6 volt horn. Otherwise, it is 12 volts.

Thank you all for your help. Greatly appreciated. I noticed one broken wire. Soldered back on. Still not working. I'll have to keep working at it.
