Gas gauge fluid
Anyone know of a red fluid for 34 gas gauge that doesn’t fade to a clear liquid after time.

Re: Gas gauge fluid
I believe everything has been tried to overcome the fade, except human blood, and maybe even that.

Re: Gas gauge fluid
I bought mine from "classic & exotic" (straight-eight). They supply the fluid for Duesenberg's. Lincolns, Packards ALL the True Classics. Last I had heard, they were out. They still show it on there web site $25 a vile. I bought 4, have in a nice cool dark area in one of my closets in the house for future needs.
Also IF you do a search this subject has been discussed in a couple of post very recently here on the barn.....I believe there was another source or two given as to good quality fluid that didn't fade?? |

Re: Gas gauge fluid
If you were in Rochester Washington, I could help you. I have an 80 year old bottle of Ford gauge fluid that is as red today as it was new. It is not something that can be shipped legally. There are pictures of it in my MISC photo folder. All the substitutes I've heard of eventually fade. I hope you find something locally to you. Good luck.

Re: Gas gauge fluid
I have fluid from "classic & exotic" and it seems to be holding the color well after about four years.
In an old thread I mentioned floating a ceramic or glass ball on top of pale red fluid. These 3/32" black ones should work well with the very acidic fluid. the internal diameter of the glass in our gauges is 1/8" ID. |

Re: Gas gauge fluid
Are you sure these will float? I don't know the specific gravity of either of the two materials involved (ball and gauge fluid), but I do know that when I put ceramic dishes into a sink full of dishwater, they go right to the bottom. (Glasses do too).

Re: Gas gauge fluid
Interesting that you asked since I just finished checking it and these balls are a tad on the heavy side to float.
d = .112 lb/in**3 = 3.10 g/cm**3 for the ball df = 2.967 g/cm3 at 25 °C The ball is just a tad heavy. Yes ceramic in water will go right to the bottom but water density is only 1 whereas the red gauge fluid density is 2.967. Further searching required to get an acid resistant ball that has a density less than 2.967 g/cm**3 Glenn |

Re: Gas gauge fluid
The first fluid I installed was from Macs and after 2 years it was almost clear. 3 years ago I replaced with Straighteight and it has faded a bit but very readable. My top is down for the whole summer so it receives a lot of sun.
