Default 49 rear axle seal removal Dana 44

What has worked in removing the axle seal from a Dana 44? These are the original seals - rawhide. I made a 'J' hook puller for the end of my slide hammer that I placed inside the seal, and no movement. Also tried a sheet metal screw without success. I read where some have used the end of the
axle to remove them, not sure how that works.

Please let me know your successes.

Thanks
wga

take the axle place it in the housing with the splined end touching the inside of the seal. now push the outer end of the axle toward the center of the car. use a fast jerking movement the axle must pivot on the housing end. if you can understand what i am saying it works
