The direction of thrust of the camshaft was changed on the 49-53 engines from the direction of the earlier model flatheads. So, either they sent you an early camshaft gear or your engine was built incorrectly with an early cam gear at some time.

If your engine has the stock timing cover and distributor you need the late gear set. If it has been changed to the early distributor down front you must use the early gears.

I just disassembled a 49 8BA and it has the early gears in it. Is there a real problem with that? I know you can’t use the later gears on the early engines with the front mounted distributor.

Either gear set will work. Get a good set of either style of gears and you will be fine. My personal preference is an aluminum camshaft gear instead of fiber.
My understanding is Ronnieroadster has done testing and found that the helical gears driving the oil pump thrust the cam in the same direction regardless of the timing gears.

That is very interesting. I hope Ronnieroadster will provide more info. on his findings.

And then there are straight cut gears for those that want to go fast.

He has mentioned it at least two times on this forum, it got some discussion in this thread: https://fordbarn.com/forum/showthrea...0099&showall=1
