Default Re: Magneto Headlight Bulbs

I've been looking at the expanded use of LED's in traffic signals and I'd swear, in the tail lights of some 2002 cars. An LED light cluster is identified by it's "pebbley" appearance. There are ready-to-insert LED bulbs that replace the 1156--single contact 12 volt bulb-- but they are a bit pricy at $40+, plus they are a whopping 70 foot candle power. The up side?, they draw less than 1/2 an amp and produce no heat. It seems one could buy about 4 or 5 12 volt LED's at an electronics store and wire and pot them into the gutted base of an 1156 bulb for a oil tail light conversion. Concerning headlights, has anyone tried using a Zener diode to limit current to them. enabling use of the available 12 volt bulbs? I don't mean the halogens, the magneto doesn't put out near enough current to power them.
