Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
So the fourth of july is coming and I plan on heading up to my lake house in Ossippie NH a 130 mile ride only problem is I want both my old 48 harly pan bobber and my A with me ( can't choose a favorite) so I'm thinking about strapping my bike down in the bed of my model a I have a 6 ' wood bed and with the tailgaite down she will fit in but I'm just concerned about putting. A 950lb bike in the A not sure how well she will be able to handle it I have hauled loads of gravel and things of the such but never that far and idk how much they weighed. What's your thoughts?

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
I hauled a friend and her husband once to the fireworks display here in my tudor. She weighs about 350# and her husband is at 300# plus me and my wife. That puts the weight at 1000# or more total. The car had to pull some pretty good hills and did fine. I did have a HC head and a touring cam.

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
I suspect your weight calculations may be a bit off. My stock 1981 Lowrider tips the scale at 615 pounds, electric start and all. My 1970's style 48 Pan TT bike (Tavern to Tavern) is 481 pounds.
I think you won't have a problem hauling it.

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
as always, depends on how fast you are planning on getting there.. I have a tudor and hae carried likely 1000 lbs in 4 adult passengers, wood trunk, toolbox tools and spare parts
After the NW regional, we loaded about 50 cases of 1 liter x 24 bottles of water into a 28 pickup and seemed to do fine.. I'd just watch to make sure your steering does not get a little light in case your load was more tail-heavy.. Send us pics when you get it loaded up! |

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
I can't imagine that bike being that much heavier than my 05 Sportster. Mine weighs around 600lbs.
I think you would be fine, but that said you could always load it and take a 25-30 mile drive and see how it does a couple days before you leave.

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
Picture this. You are sitting outside your lake house with your lawn chair and fishing pole out and thinking to yourself, "Sh--, its a perfect day for a ride. I wish i had brought my panhead". I say bring it. You wont be sorry. Gotta agree with others on the weight. My 03 Ultra weighs in at about 890 pounds. Yours is alot less than that. Have a safe trip and good luck.

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
The weight will be fairly high, with the A suspension be carefull around curves/corners.

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
The WR was a much smaller bike than the panhead,it was a 45 inch flathead race bike as compared to the 74 inch OHV panhead road bike.My 50 panhead in stock form weighed in at 517 on the scales with a single pogo seat and no bags.Load it up and go.

My 1991 Dyna Glide weighs about 550 lbs. I can't think that your '48 Panhead would be any heavier. MIKE |

It was the first 48 Harley I found. I was trying to find the bigger bikes weight still. Thanks!

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
Yup-a '48 bobber shouldn't weigh much more than 500 or so lbs.

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
Derek, you don't want to run the A up here this weekend anyway. We just stood out on RT 125 at the diner watching the traffic pile up.It is backing up for 2 and 3 miles at the lights.95 degree heat on new pavement. Also, the ticket writing fingers haven't cooled down from bike week, they're still hot and heavy on the bike stops right now so the bike has to be perfect.I got stopped at about 10:00 last night just for a check. They just checked my papers, listened to my exhaust, asked if I'd been drinking, and if I had any weapons.I told them I don't drink, there was a gun in the saddlebag, and they could take a look if they liked. They looked at my pistol permit, and said to have a nice night.Never looked in the bags. That was up on RT 153,not too far from your camp.

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
That's some good advice Keith I still need to get up to ossippe and I only have two options so I have to pick the lessor of two evils traffic in 85 year old car or heat and traffic and cops on bike.

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
Cheeze it! You scooter trash guys up in yankee land sure do have to put
up with a lot of crap from the cops! I've been riding my Panhead with straight pipes for many, many years and no hassles here in Florida. No road side Gestapo type "safety checks" either. Back in the 70's things were pretty bad. But, in the past 25 years or so I haven't heard about any harassments except maybe Daytona Beach during Bike Week. And that is one place I avoid, me not being a "yuppie" biker, but a long haired bearded grease-ball type. Bob-A |

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
I've hauled over 1000 lbs in my 28 pickup a number of times, no problem. Just watch your braking distance and pump the rear tires to 50 lbs.

Re: Weight capacity? Hauling Harley.
My A-400 weighed in at 3580 lbs for the Around the World Tour...that included an additional 23 gallon gas tank in the rear plus tools, spare parts and the normal clothes and other necessities. When the rear tank was full ,at 8lbs to the gallon it did make for light steering!! We were on Freeways and other major highways in various countries...You learn to pay full attention to your driving and to be aware of those other vehicles around you!!... You will do fine...enjoy your holiday.....
