oil pan gasket

Simple questions really, I searching the forums hasn't really lead me to the answer I'm seeking.

I'm getting ready to drop the oil pan and clean the old oil out of the pan, but I want to replace the gasket. What's better to use, a paper or cork gasket? I want to use what is going to work the best.

I like cork and this information was given to me by a Ford barner years ago and I am forever grateful for his help. It worked really well for me.

I think you will get different answers to this. I just did what you mentioned and I took the advice of one of our fellow barners and used paper and #2 Permatex. worked great. No leaks. I was concerned cork would flatten out and leak. A dab of permatex on the ends of the new rope seals also. I got the gasket set from Bratton's.

I've tried the Snyders' cork with memory type ( 6' # bolt torque) which seems to help compensate for irregularities in mating surfaces. The pan surfaces should be made as flat as possible due to over-tightening. Also, use some thread sealer on bolts that enter block.

Cork or thick paper is equally effective. Just be sure the rear tabs on the pan gasket fit underneath the cork gasket over the rear bearing cap. Some folks use sealant on the pan gasket. I do not because it is a lot easier to remove the pan later. I do put a dab of #2 Permatex on the ends of the rope on the front main and the pan gasket to the rear main gasket. #2Permatex seals anything necessary on a Model A. Forget about modern silicone stuff that will eventually just sluff off and become a problem.
