Default Tailights: Top or bottom?

My car came with the top left and bottom right working the tail light and vice versa for the brake. Which is correct?

Brake lites on top, tail lites on bottom so they can illuminate the license plate.

Top is brake light, bottom is tail light.

Got it. I should have considered the license light and could have figured it out for myself. Thanks to all.

Also, there is a stop shadow in the top light, but I'm not sure if it was on all years.

That (the "stop") was a period accessory.

the "STOP" insert is factory correct for a '28 vehicle. It was not an accessory.

I stand corrected. The drum style light thru Feb. 1929.

Apologies.
