Default OT: Do any of you have a good source for Hammer Handles?

This past Saturday I decided to tune-up and 'aesthetically restore' my body hammers. Since I had quite the mismatched collection, I just cleaned all the heads (-mediablasting, filing, grinding and using a Scotchbrite pad), and then painted them with a mix of some left-over paint.

Now I need about 10 handles. Does anyone have a source for decent wooden (Hickory) handles that won't break my piggybank??

TIA!!

Did the same thing about 2 years ago, went all over town looking for handles, the only place that had handles was Ace Hardware. Good handles don't rember the cost. I used J B Weld in addition to the wedges so the heads do not wiggle.

Great tip on the JB Weld! Thx!!

I am told that the Amish must now live in China as the Amish-made units use a wood very similar to Chinese wood. I grew up old-school where I want to feel the rebound in the handle. That is why I struggle with fiberglass handle hammers on sheetmetal.

(I think what I am looking for is a 1/2" x 13/16" eye on a 12" long Hickory handle.)

Brent, you might look at McMaster-Carr. They have hickory hammer handles. https://www.mcmaster.com/wood-hammer-handles

You can get replacement Ash/Hickory handles at an ACE hardware or Do-It center. Home Depot may have them too. Bring the hammer heads with you to ensure you get the right replacement handle

Body hammers generally have a light weight handle. In my experience ball peen hammer handles will change the balance and feel pretty weird when you swing the hammer. Perhaps you won't notice it, might try one or two handles before you buy a dozen.

Have you tried a MAC tool dealer, they usually carry a better grade of body hammers, at Hershey on Friday usually a Martin body hammer guy sets up down the street from Coker, he usually has some handles, I don't know about online, usually I have to look at several handles and see if grain is straight and how it feels, machinists hammer handles usually are shorter and thicker, I've got over 100 hammers, mostly different, still buy nice feeling ones, gotten some nice body hammers at Hershey and received profitable offers while walking around with them, good handles are hard to find

I bought a Snap-On hammer for $.25 at a garage sale. Older production for sure. The wood handle has such a feel to it. I can pick blind like an extension of my arm.

That being said.

One time at Hershey I bought a blue fiberglass handle with an epoxy glue for setting it in my head. That has a whole different feel and I reach for that one when I am doing more movement. It has solid hit.

In the end my main 2 hammers are these two. The fiberglass is a dull pick and round convex head and the Snap on is a shorter round with sharper pick.

I had about a week in high school wood shop on making hammer handles.
We made them from several kinds of wood to see how they felt when in use.
It was quite hard to tell the difference if any.
I have never bought a hammer handle.
If you have a belt grinder with a 36 grit belt, shaping goes very fast.
If you have nothing to do on a winter evening, try checkering the grip of your favorite one.
Guaranteed to draw comments from shop visitors.

If you have a lathe and mill you can make the heads also.
