Default Holley 94 Rebuild - Something Strange

I'm in the process of assembling my Holley 94, and it seems there is something blocking the pump discharge needle from dropping down into the hole. I have another Holley 94, and it has the same blockage. I have the two original pump discharge needle valves, so I'm really perplexed as to what is in there, and more importantly, how to get the damn things out as they are stuck in there.

Body number 1.

Appears to be a ball stuck down in the holes? Blow them out with compressed air?

Those are float needles, aren't they? Not the discharge needle? They have a groove for a retainer clip, which the discharge needle doesn't have.

I think the float needle is square and mine has some soft material on the tip. The pump needle has three sides and is solid metal, at least from what I can tell as this is my first attempt to rebuild one of these carbs. Still really strange as to why both carb bodies have the same issue.

After determining whatever was in there was relatively soft, I decided to go for it and drilled into it with my drill press using a 5/64" bit so I could use my small extractor. Luckily, I was able to pull it out easily with the extractor. So it is indeed the pump needle that was stuck in there. I'm wondering then, what the other needles are for. Pump needle on top. The tip is very sharp compared to the other two.

Attached is a pic I took to keep me from getting mixed up on reassembly; I believe this was from a undisturbed carb. The three sided one is used on the brass seat, the four sided on the pump. The three sided tip is clean while the 4 sided has the "white stuff" which comes from where it lives, in the bottom of the carb where all the other "white stuff" lives.

Ziggster. Here is a link to videos that Charlie Price did on rebuilding a 94 carb, There are three more in the series, that you can click on to watch.

Thanks. Ok. That means the two three sided ones must also be the original fuel inlet needle valve operated by the float. I must have gotten two new ones (the brass 4-sided ones with the soft tip). Part of the problem is my iPad deleted all the pics I took during disassembly.

Did you get the blockage out ? If not put a 1/16 dia drill in your drill press and
center it over the bore. Carefully start the drill on the blockage. The blockage is
of course the 4 sided brass check needle. The drill will get it spinning and it will drop out...carefully.

Yes, I got it out like you said, but I just inserted my smallest extractor to pull it out. Can't believe I didn't think that it could actually believe it was the needle casing the blockage.

Thanks Charlie. I wouldn't be able to do half the things I have done without help from folks here and on the HAMB.
I got the accelerator pump circuit needle out from the other body after heating it up in the oven. I'll clean it up, and reuse it. I have a new found respect for those that rebuild carbs, distributors, etc. Not an easy task by any means.

My current progress...Lol!

Did you get the tiny check ball out, that is held in by a spring clip in the bottom of the accelerator pump bore? It was kind of hidden by sediment in the bore. I missed it when I was in the process of rebuilding my carb, until I found this little ball in left over parts, then started to look for where it was to be used.

Yes, I saw mine and changed it out with new check ball and retainer spring. I will say that if I ever have to do this again, I’ll get an ultrasonic cleaner, as there are just too many nooks and crannies. Even after “cleaning” everything, when I was applying some carburetor/choke cleaner, I still would see “stuff” settleling out of the liquid.

You should be able to hear the little check ball at the bottom of the accelerator pump bore rattle when you shake the otherwise empty carb body. If it doesn't rattle, it might be clogged with sediment.

Even I've got better carbs than that! Well done for turning it around.
