Default Remove hood hinge pins?????

Friends,
Would like to separate my hood into pieces to clean up and paint.
Hinges work freely, but can’t budge pins and don’t want to expand the ends trying to drive them out.
Any experience you can share of how you did it?
Thanks.
Jerry

Tap them out enough to get your drill chuck on the rod and use slow speed and some oil on the rod. You should be able to spin the rods out, but depending on rust and dirt.

Replace them with brazing rods you can get at a welding shop.

Some model A vendors sell stainless steel rods. When using these rods, you don't have to worry about rust, at least on the rods.

I’ve done it that way successfully. For reassembly, I use SS.

Go to your local steel sales. Buy stainless rods from them. Skip the middle man.

Soak in 50/50 ATF & acetone then gently heat hinges from the under side with oxy/ace torch (But not enough to warp), then tap out. Working hood tops back & forth helps too.

I have seen older rods that are solid and a couple that were hollow. For solid rods you can use a nail set and a little hammer to start the rod out. Then use your drill chuck to remove the remainder of the way. Replace the old rusty rods with stainless steel. For hollow rods you just have to be damned careful not to flare the end. Use a drift the same diameter as the hollow rod and tap tap tap until the rod pokes out the opposite end. Then do the drill chuck thing. Of course, you need to solidly support the hood panels on either side while tapping.

I removed the hinge pin with a pair of needle nose vice grips and gently tapped on the vice grips and dragged the pin out. First apply some oil to the hinge by standing the hood vertically and dripping the oil down the inside of the hinge. I would be very careful using any heat on the hood. It will be very difficult to remove any heat distortion. Ed

On a couple of 29's I have found the center pin to not be a pin at all, it is a tube formed from flat stock which means there is a spot there the two ends of the flat stock meet that is just a butt fit and it is likely that over the years one end or the other has turned to give you a tube with a spiral joint. I was unaware of this on the first one I took out, tapped it gently and it moved right along a few inches then hung up and twisted so badly I had to take it out in short sections like working the lid off an old salmon can of the past. So be aware, With a new rod you can bump them through, driving the old tube out with the new. I use a hardwood block to drive and light taps to avoid swelling the end of the mew rod. Feed it oil as you go, works for me.
