Grinding crank flange
Grinding crank flange.rtfd.zipGrinding crank flange.rtfd.zipIn April, 6 of us took my hill climb car to Unicoi TN hill climb. We made many runs and had the rev limiter set at 4500 rpms. The flywheel came loose, it broke the heads off 3 of the flywheel bolts. It damaged the flange face and flywheel so they were no longer flat and true.
To fix the crank with out taking apart the engine. I used my proratable crank grinder and the motor I use to put in valve seats in, to turn the engine, and grind the flange. picture below For some reason pictures did not post. Re: Grinding crank flange
Slick fix. Looks like you have the flange drilled for 6 bolts? Did you use the ARP bolts?

Re: Grinding crank flange
Just how far out is that flange tweeked?
I would say that setup will work if you can keep the chatter to a minimum.

Re: Grinding crank flange
Nice! A good way to get things running true when assembling any engine.

Re: Grinding crank flange
I always put in 2 extra bolts, keeping the dowels and original bolt holes. I also use better bolts, V8 or ARP, without safety wire.

Re: Grinding crank flange
Great job George.
Glad to know there are still folks out there with enough machinist know how to make something out of nothing, or make do with a lot more brain than muscle.

Re: Grinding crank flange
George, A K.O. Lee seat cutter motor geared down and a Winona crank grinder. Thats putting your tools to work. Are you using a hollowed out center grinding wheel on your Winona?

Re: Grinding crank flange
Not this time. I do not have many grinding stones left. The last time I use it was to grind a crank for my hill climb engine in my lathe. Because no one. wanted to put the proper radius on the crank journals.

Re: Grinding crank flange
How well I remember those Old Crank Grinders! Verle was a GENIUS at regrinding a Rod Throw. He could also rebore & re-sleeve a "V"type engine, with the engine IN the car!!!

Re: Grinding crank flange
Bill
I use to do a few in the old days when I worked in my Dads garage. We were the only one in our area of northern Mich. I would take it to the garage that was working on the car with a bad rod journal. Most of the time they would be coming from lower Mich on vacation with a engine full of sludge. |
