Default Engine noises I give up

Why is it that people do not want to try and find out where engine noise comes from before they take every thing apart?

Analytical reasoning comes with experience and knowledge, maybe many are at the start of the curve. Besides, I learned a lot taking apart my Dad's stuff especially when he found out!

I don't mind work, but I do not like working if I do not have to. I think also years ago I worked on to many cars that some screwed up, but did not tell you what they did. Maybe I'm getting to old.

For some of us, taking something apart and (hopefully) getting it back together is a great way to learn how that thing works. That said, indiscriminate wrenching can be a really bad idea! I try to get some experience-based wisdom from my Model A friends first.

My favorite stethoscope is a four foot length of garden hose. One end to the ear and the other end will quickly isolate a noise. I find it superior to more "Professional" devices.

I just found an engine noise... The guy had his engine splash pans jammed up between the frame and the engine on both sides,, no bolts at all
It's a good thing I didn't pull the pan

God help us all
I guess I should feel sorry for the poor fellow. You would think any one would know more than that.

Me thinks there are a lot of newbie's here in the past 6-9 months, AND that's a good thing. Some had them when younger, some always wanted one but many have little to no experience with an A. Hopefully they will stick around, use the search function, and ask ANY question they have (there are NO "dumb" questions).

Mitch: Good luck with the thumb and congrats (late) on your award.

I suppose that it is possible that the present owner bought the car with the pans installed wrong ... not knowing how they are supposed to be installed!

And who knows maybe he got a very good deal on the price because of the noise!

Back in the 80's I bought a one owner, fully loaded Olds Cutlass really cheap because it sounded like it had a rod knock. I removed the pan and rod bearings, but they looked good. I installed new ones as long as they were already out. I then removed the valve covers and replaced some of the broken plastic rocker arm plugs, but that didn't stop the noise either. I then drove about 5 miles to the auto store, put a can of Sea Foam in the oil, and by the time I got home the engine sounded like a new one. Best $5 I ever spent.
