Default oil pressure relief spring

I see in my pile of stuff there are two different length springs for the oil pressure relief valve in the valve chamber,in my green book it shows different ones ,but not the lengths.
I presume the longer spring is for when using the late model pump.
Im using an 8ba type with the relief in the pump,so If I fit the longer spring the oil pressure will be regulated by the relief valve in the pump??.

That's right Lawrie. The early 30's had a very weak spring, 59 blocks had a stiffer spring. I use the 8BA pump in all my engines. I put 2-3 small washers on top of the spring on the pre 8BA engines and let the 8BA pump valve do it's thing. Walt

I also shimmed an 8BA pump when I built my engine. Great oil pressure!

Well, I always thought that 30# oil pressure was fine for old stock v8's. Why the quest for higher pressure? Is higher pressure better for stock drivers?
Thanks

You can adjust the front oil pressure relief with the engine sitting on the floor or in the car. Remove the intake manifold, remove spark plugs and install a mechanical oil pump at the pressure outlet where the oil pressure sender is. Put oil in the crankcase and crank the engine with 12 volts to the starter. Let it spin fast and see what the oil pressure is. If low remove cap from the relief valve and shim the top of the spring, don't stretch it because it will relax again. I use 1/8" pipe and start out about 3/16" thick, the ID of the spacer has to clear the pin on the top end of the valve. The pressure seen on the gauge is the pressure that will be shown at driving speeds. The valve it self has a flat on the end so you can never shut it off completely. The oil leaking through the valve lubricates the timing gears and is slung into 2 little passages to lubricate the 24 stud 37 to 48 water pumps. I like 45 or 50 lbs I don't believe in low oil pressure. The oil pumps with adjustable valves can be shim adjusted with a simple test fixture out of the engine driven by a 1/2" electric drill. G.M.

GM, what I will do is,fit my remote oil pump and filter assay ,( from A 202 Holden), drive ti with my 1/2 drill, and plum it into the oil pressure gauge port on the block, then with the oil pan off, set the front relief valve above the one on the 8ba pump, also that will prelude the engine before I start it and make sure all the floater bearings are getting good oil flow.
I will post a pic tomorrow.

Sounds good. You will be surprised at how little oil leaks out of the bearings. G.M.

You will be surprised at how MUCH oil leaks out of the bearings when the crank assembly is rotating.

I wanted to use the floaters,It would have been WAY cheaper to use the 8ba rods, but when you see the nice setup with the floaters, why not.My boy said it would be cheaper to use a new set of scat rods ,But I wanted the ford stuff.
I took great care in fitting them, used nos Ford bearings, new scat 4in crank and ol Rons book.
