Air Cleaner Steel Wool a Suitable Replacement?
I found an original aircleaner for my 49 F1. The wire mesh looked pretty dirty and bits would drop through the retaining wire gauze when I tapped it. I took the wire gauze off and the wire mesh is not only dirty, but seems to be disintegrating - not something I want through my engine. I want to retain the original oil bath function. What was the original substance?Would steel wool be a suitable replacement for the mesh?

I would not use steel wool, the fibres seem too small and may come to bits and get sucked in.
what about some fine chicken mesh . Lawrie |

The early air filters can be replaced perfectly with Chore Boy copper mesh scrubbers. Don't know what was in your filter, but nobody has reported any problems from using Chore Boy.

With a little ingenuity you can convert it to a paper filter and no one will know the difference. Gets rid of the messy oil and it's easy to change.

Thank you for your comments everyone. The Kiwi equivalent of 'Chore Boy' seems to be 'Goldilocks'. I grabbed one from under the sink and I think this will do - only I need about 20 of them ...

a friend put steel wool in place of paper in the air cleaner of a 1961 ford starliner 3 carb 401.Increased the air flow but got in and ruined the motor.
