Default Distributor

Was putting the distributor on my 39 flathead tonight, it's the original one for the motor. The cam is new. I double checked the number on the order form for the cam, it is supposed to be for the 39..Here's the problem the key on the distributor does not engage with the keyway in the cam....Do I have to replace the cam, hope not expensive mistake...is there an adaptor to make this work as is????

There is an adapter button that is used with a later style cam and an early helmet distributer. It is a disk with a key on one side and a groove 90* on the other side.

Be careful which adaptor button you buy and use. Some are poorly made and will allow the distributor to fit 180° out of phase and turn the distributor shaft without breaking the distributor casting.
