Default Mallory 4004 distributor cap

The lower cap for my Mallory zc275 distributor has one of the threads stripped out on one of the holes. Has anyone repaired on of these? It does have 4 1/2 good threads left at the bottom and I could use a longer screw but don't know if that would be sufficient to hold it down. I hate to go with the MA5 cap and MA7 rotor and lose the vintage look.

In the past when i had one with a completely striped out thread i just went to the next size screw diameter I taped the now striped hole and opened up the hole size slightly on the top section.

Not sure but I think the present size is 8/32 i used a 10/32 for the new size.

Just to let anyone interested in the NAPA Echlin MA5 cap and MA7 rotor I bought the last rotor from warehouse stock a couple years ago. I just did a search for the cap and that shows as “No stock” now also. It may be possible to find them in a local store’s stock so I’d suggest checking soon.
The rotor is an exact replacement for the Mallory, while the cap has towers, it is not a flat cap design.

Have you tried Summit? I bought a cap and rotor for a vintage Mallory distributor from them about a year ago. To find the proper fitment, you may have to use the later part number. (Mallory went from the YA-,ZC-, etc. part numbers to things like 25nnn at some time in the process.)

The only thing was it was a horrible blue plastic. I painted it black with some paint made specifically for plastic. So far, so good.

There is an MA 5 Cap at a Napa warehouse in Alabama, what city they won't tell me , you may have your local store check again, I bought a dozen from Germany last year, can't find anymore but the one listed on Napa inventory in Ala. if you can't locate elsewhere , there are two versions one is vented and other non vented pn. MA5 and MA9. I think there is a short tower and tall tower not sure.

Thanks for your help
I’m in Norman OK, the local Napa has a call into the warehouse. They said there are probably none there. Just hoping someone knew of a replacement for the MA5 or MA9, or maybe what else besides the Mallory theses fit.

Guys i just search and buy the orginal flat top cap by buying a complete distributor on ebay. You can get a deal on them from time to time.....The MA5 is just a normal type cap not the flat top Mallory.........

Heres the deal of the day :
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Mal...ty!46224!US!-1

and then you can machine this one to fit the flathead as well ????

We just light glass bead the old cap and spray with clear coat. Inspect the center carbon button and use them again they work very well...... brass contact dont seem to wear out...

Thanks all for the inputs, as Bubba recommended i’ve bought a complete distributor just for the flat top cap. Bubba I’ll be in touch to get my Mallory YB 247AX freshened up once I have the cap in hand.

I took the distributor to a local mechanic (not a tech) to check the curve. He noticed and repaired the lower cap and charged a total of nothing. He's an old time hot rodder who loves flatheads. The car runs great now.
