Default 39 crankshaft question

can anyone tell what crank i have from the snout size? the one in question measures about 1.187 and is not keyed. only sticks out past front cover about 1/2 inch. 91a (39) sheave is too big as my other 39 engines crank measure about 1.310 is keyed and protrudes 2 inches past front cover.91a sheave fit this crank any ideas? thanks, Mark

221 v8 short crank thru 1938. Flat pulley

long crank started 1939 -extended snout pulley

21 stud or 24 stud? Insert main bearings or poured babbit?

it is a 24 stud with insert bearings, has 81a heads on it and a helmet dist. seems strange there is no keyway for pulley. Mark

When the 24 stud was first introduced in 1938, it ran the same crankshaft [the one you have], as the 36LB through 37,38 21 stud engines. That particular block has smaller dia main tunnels than all subsequent 24 stud engines.

The 1939 standard cars still had the short snout crank and generator mounted fan. The 1939 Deluxe cars had the long snout large main crank for the new crank mounted fan set up.

I always understood the 39 std and deluxe engines shared the same crankshaft
91A 6303-A. The difference being the pulley.
81C 6312 for the standard and 91A 6312 for the 39 deluxe ( as well as the 39/40 Mercury and 40 std and deluxe. )

so it looks like engine is a 38 correct? pulled heads yesterday and measured bore at 3.072 about .010 wear i will know better when i can measure bottom of cylinders. i got this eng. 41 years ago in my 39 deluxe and fired it up once but crank pulley (91a) wobbled due to being too big. Mark

I'd forgotten that they started using the long snout crank in the 1939 standards & commercials. I've seen one short snout crank from 1939 commercial but it may have been either a replacement or possibly early model year where Ford was using up older inventories. That was back in the 70s so anything is possible in that respect. Few prewar vehicles didn't have at least one overhaul by then. Farm pickups in Kansas got pretty well used up during the war.

Mark;

The notch on the engine end of the flat 1938 (or earlier) pulley will

engage the woodruff key on crank.

Pre 1939 221s have flanged rod bearings -- crank rod

journals are wider than 1939 and later cranks which use flat rod

bearings.

Good FORD FUN!
