" Ford’s F1s were referred to as Bonus-Built because they were the first of a long series of pickups that were not based on a passenger car chassis."

The sales literature from the day refers to all the superior features of the first postwar designs as delivering 'something extra' from earlier versions. This is the 'Bonus'. Have a look for yourself:

Guys:

1942-1947 "jailbar" pickups and vans were the first 1/2 Tons

"commercial" with dedicated ladder type lite truck frame.

F-1s used the same frame with extended front frame rails.

Crossmembers, spring hangers were 21C "commercial" 1942-1952

Old Ford Fun!!

They were such a good deal that the buyer was rewarded with a "bonus" so they said. All marketing strategy of course. Ford sold a lot of them for sure. I've had access to both the Chevy and Ford 1/2-ton pickups of the era and I like both but the Ford is still worth more is decent shape. The 216 six was getting pretty dated by 1947 but GM kept it till 1953 just like Ford kept the flathead 239. The flathead was a good puller & smooth driver and I liked the floor shift 3-speed better until I needed to carry a 3rd person. Couldn't beat the Chevy for that. They had a bit more room and the column shift.

I have a 45 and it has semi elliptical springs, so the 42 -47 trucks had a more modern suspension than the cars. I have wondered how the engineers got that past Henry, who was wedded to buggy springs? It’s a nice riding truck for its age.
