Killin time with Covid 19 and JC Whitney

Sibs and I are cleaning out our parents home. I came across a few car mags from my high school years 65-68. I found two JC Whitney cats from 1966-68. What a riot looking back at myself from long ago. I wondered just how many of us are driving Model "A"s currently that may still have some of those parts. THAT scared the hell out of me.

It was 1962 that I got my first Model A.

I used JC Whitney parts back in the day . I found and bought a few old JC Whitney catalogs from eBay , just to look back on and remember .

Same here. I remember ordering a floor mat for my early 30 ccpu. They sent me floor boards.. One time I got a refund check for .10 cents. Had it framed. lol

Model A restoration in the late 60's early 70's was Warshawsky,Mark Auto,Ricks and an annual pilgrimage to Hershey..good used parts were available in town,you found them in the "pennysaver", weekly advertising ads,the reliance on reproduction parts was no where near as high. Timing gears,gaskets,soft parts..there was no 'survivor' or 'banger' classes..

I got my September 1929 Standard Coupe from a farmer friend of mine who lived down the road from our farm in 1966...I was 16 years old.

He gave me a J. C. Whitney catalog to order parts from.

The first thing I restored was the rear axle. I needed a Ring Gear and Pinion and got it from JC Whitney.

54 years later...That Ring Gear and Pinion are still in the Rear End of my coupe and, knock on wood,...still going great guns!

I am going to look in my records and see just what it cost me then.

I have several of the Mark auto catalogs, but no JC Whitney, used to order a lot for my '64 Plymouth sport fury convertible, skip school, drive 20 minutes and be on the California beach. Good memories

Back in the late 60's, I was driving an original (except paint/tires) '29 Chevy 2-dr coach. My dad and I bought a few items for the Chevy from JC Whitney because that was all they had. I remember saying to myself at the time:
"Boy those Model-A guys sure do have it nice with all the stuff they can get.
Some day I'm gon'na get me an 'A'!" The rest they say is history....

My A came with old ball headlights, an old man had the original that needed some work. Ordered parts from J.C.Whitney to re-due the lights, this was about 1969 or 1970. Sometime in the mid 70's Whitney parts became junk.

You could buy alot of stuff at the local auto supply back then too..clutches,suspension parts,brakes ect..

JC Whitney was the go to source for a lot of automotive parts for those of us in more rural areas back in the sixties, and that had a few pages devoted to Model A's. For real Model A parts the best mail order source I found was Ford Parts Obsolete in southern California. I used them both during my early Model A years, 1959 to 1967. My cabriolet still had scraps of the JCW seat cover when I started to rebuild the car less than a decade ago.

Those catalogs were the magic carpet ride for me as a teenager. Looking through the old go fast parts that I didn't have money to buy. I graduated HS in 1963, I remember they even sold Hudson Hornet engines in the late 50s & early 60s. Some of my friend bought parts from them and I do not recall having trouble with the parts. Now I look at the Summit and Jeg's catalogs for the modern stuff and Snyder's , and the others to feed my 5 As

JC Whitney was my go-to source for Model A parts in the late ‘50s. Although I was able to get some stuff from NAPA.

OK TB...Just found my original records!

It was December 4, 1966 that I ordered from JC Whitney A Ring Gear and Pinion for my September 1929 Standard Coupe...$23.00 and as stated above...still going strong...knock on wood!

There was a bunch of other stuff That I ordered then and are still on the car...unbelievable prices but that was 54 years ago also!
