Default 40 ford coupe battery box issue (again?)

First post here. Please forgive me if this has been hashed out several times before (if so, please post a link)... i searched and didnt see anything that summed this up for me.

Anyhoo, we recently got a 40 coupe thats almost all stock except for a few items. The car is still 6v positive ground. It had a 6v battery in it but it seems small for the tray and hold down. After searching, it seems that the car has the "late" battery box and the firewall style hold down, but it appears that even if the battery was the full size of the tray only about 1/8th inch of the battery would be under the hold down. Is that normal? I read on the forums somewhere about it needs to be a "group 2" 6 volt battery but i still dont see how the hold down can grip much of the battery. Maybe im missing a piece.

Can someone please post a couple of pics of how the battery in the tray should look as if it were factory?

Thanks in advance for your help and sorry if this is a rehash.

Take a look at this site. Then click on the little diagram to see parts.
Apparantly there's a little pad that goes between the hold down and the battery. I wonder if OEM 1940 Ford batterys had a wider top edge to accommodate that hold down mechanism?

I know it's not OEM correct but I just made a plastic spacer with a threaded hole and wedged it in between my firewall clamp and battery top. Many years ago someone brazed the firewall clamp in place so it's not movable. I never noticed it had been done. This car has been converted to 12V Neg. grnd. so battery cables are switched. Here's another site that shows the 1940 battery hold down pad.

Thanks 19fordy. We do have the little pad under the clamp. And that is the battery tray we have. But like the picture you sent, it looks like the hold down only grips the very back edge of the battery (where you put your spacer).

I assume thats the design intent from Ford.

Thanks again.

I have seen battery hold down clamps for the
top perimeter of the battery, but they are not OEM.
I never had any problem with the battery moving around.
