Back to the 50's stock cars
This was dirt track racing mid 50's in Central WA. The 34 Ford was my Dad's first, then came the center car......take a guess. OK, it's a 33 Rockne (Studebaker coupe). It fit within the rules at that time which allowed flathead Fords, some 6 cyls under 260 cu. in ( as I recall). This eliminated most of the o'head V8's of the time, but this little Stude O'head engine was small enough to be legal. No one else at the time had one. It was very fast for the time and wasn't real popular with the die hard boys. Automatic trans too. That's me at about 10 yrs of age. Not to worry tho, my Dad was a die hard Ford man ,(especially flatheads).

Re: Back to the 50's stock cars
Couple of shots of the car I was involved with back in the 50's.
At the time we were evolving from full size coupes to cut-downs. The first shot shows the lowering and customization. The next one shows it with the body narrowed. (at a local car show) |

Re: Back to the 50's stock cars
Here in ET we ran .60 over engines and had great racing. They later went to SBC engines and racing went down hill. The near stock cars really drew a larger crowd than the later modifieds. Seemed like everybody knew someone that was running.

Re: Back to the 50's stock cars
The 32,33,34 three window coupe's were the car of choice back in the late 40's and early 50's in Missouri and adjoining states. My car, owned by Sandy Sanderson, was a 34. I ran in what was called "Full Modified" my 34 ran 59AB flatheads built by Sandy and it was a 34.
Wish I had it now. Sorry no pictures they were all burned in a fire in the 70's while being copied by our old chief mechanic. Don't know what happened to the over 100 Trophy Dash trophy's when the car owner passed. |

Re: Back to the 50's stock cars
Man oh man, does that bring back fond memories. I loved going to those. my first date with my future wife was at a little 1/4 mile near where I live. airport runway expansion in later years consumed the old pavement and its just a great memory now. todays racing kinda sucks when you could not buy anything close to what they run except a piece of floor board metal from under the drivers feet made by the manufacturer !

Re: Back to the 50's stock cars
Just this last spring I dug out my 34 3 window that I last drove in 64. I built an engine for it and hope to have it running next summer. It is a true time capsule of how these cars were built and run.

Sad to see the '38 Ford convertible getting banged up on a dirt track.
