Default Anyone use these drill/tap all in one?

Just wonder how well they work. These are from Amazon but others sell them as well.

Not used them, but have seen them reviewed on Youtube. The problem is you need to go fast for the drill and slow for the tap. I think they are ok in relatively thin metal. For example, how can you countersink a hole if the tap is still cutting threads?
Probably great for some specific purpose, but not great in a lot of cases.
Just what I saw and no reason not to agree.

Anything from Dewalt rules, these are time savers. They have been around for a long
time. They really came into play with automatic screw machines - watch these amazing
machines on Utube capable of thousands of parts per hr. Another must have is step
drill that drilling a simple 3/4 hole for say an antenna 5 seconds with the step drill.
So I give those 5***** rating. sam

Mart if I read this correctly, there is a drill tap and a counter bore on top, all
in one, so its only one operation used with a reversible automatic tapping
head. It works like this a mill or drill press you set the depth of countersink
or counter bore then lock the quill stop when the quill hits the stop the tapping
head instantly reverses. again this is for production. So for most here go for
drill and tap & tooling change to countersink or counter bore. Hope I wrote
this understandable I'm a do'er not story writer like John boy Walton LOL

I think they're made for home gamers with a hand held drill/driver, Sam, not an automatic tapping head in a milling machine.
Mart.

Edit: this is the video I remember. I don't know if the dewalt ones are significantly different.

Note that the advertisement states "impact ready", implying using some sort of impact driver. By nature impact drivers tend to slow dramatically with torque change so should work well both for drilling (higher speed, low torque) and tapping (lower speed, higher torque). Using a straight drill/drill press/mill/lathe would likely not have nearly as good results. We have used "butterfly" impact wrenches for hand tapping for years with very good results.

Lawson guy gave me one as a sample; 10-32 size straight shank with 3 flats. Made several tapped holes in 1/4" aluminum and some in 11 gauge steel tube; thing worked good. I used a cordless drill and just watched when to slow for tapping, stop when done, and reverse it out of the hole. With those hex drives they look like they would be slick in an impact driver.

Yes, I have seen them and used them BUT the issue is, after you get the hole drilled if you are going too fast and the tap grabs it breaks.

I have found that most tools made to do more than one thing are as useless as tits on a bore hog. Drill your hole with a drill bit. Tap your threads with a tap.

Yes, you need to tap at about 1/2 the drilling speed, that goes for the C'sinking, too.

As a machinist, this is how it always goes for me.

This doesn't work with a tapping head, if your wanting to use the C'sink. Tapping head, only reverse when the spindle, in the head, gets to a set depth (it pulls itself down, when the milling or D'press spindle stops). If you use the C'sink, there is nothing to pull it down, to reverse. You have to pull the spindle back up, contacting the thread with the tap (going wrong way) until it reaches the travel it needs to reverse. Then, when it does reverse, you stand the chance of it double threading the existing thread.

I agree with Lawson. I have found that most "do-everything" tools don't do anything well.

A lot of the bores I need to tap have a bottom. Sometimes I even need a bottoming tap. I'm not a big fan of the two flute design taps either but they would work for some applications. I like to go nice and slow with taps and use lots of cutting oil.

Like anything it has its place. If you need to drill and tap a lot of holes in half inch steel these would be a real time saver. As others said you can use them with a hand drill and that is a plus if you cannot physically hold a piece on a machine. As said before they are not good for blind holes.

Doubt that it will work as a 1/4" material is max capacity.

Just imagine when one of those dual purpose taps breaks off in the hole. Good luck.
Follow Lawson's advise.
Plus, when using a hand tap you can "feel" the cut and ease up as needed.

These draps were for CNC machines where speed and feed were controlled. They came available in the 60's.

I have some of better quality then the Dewalt ones. They work GREAT on thinner metal and aluminum. Slow and steady pressure for the drill and slow and light for tapping (with tap magic on tap), I've done 3/16" steel and 1/4" aluminum. I use them mostly for mounting fuel/brake lines to the frame.

I have a Irwin set that I use frequently, slow speed and a drop of oil and they work well as long as it is a through hole on thinner material.
