Default Transmission questions

I'm rebuilding my transmission and have a couple of questions. I watched the DVD by the Diablo A's before starting this rebuild. On disassembly there weren't any thrust washers with the cluster gears so I reinstalled it that way and I have a 1/16" of play front to back is this normal? Also the bolts that hold the rear bearing retainer in place had lock washers and was safety wired too but I don't see any mention of lock washers being used here. Should I put them back in AND safety wire it as before?

If you have a early 28 you need the bronze bushings, front & rear..

So are you saying that the high dollar video does not give you any specs or instruction of how to check it? Use a feeler gauge to check and there should be no more than .012" end play. I try to set mine alittle tighter. Rod

The rear bearing retainer bolts (all that I have seen) use both lock washers and safety wire.

The early transmission housings used a brass boss at each end of the cluster gear. this was later discontinued in favor of building out the boss at each end of the housing during casting. I have seen various documentation that allows up to .020" thrust on the cluster gear in the later housings. This seems excessive to me. I like to get it below .010.

If it is excessive it is because the bosses are worn on the housing. Sometimes you can see a wear step. You can get a small grinder in there and take it out and install one of the brass bosses in the end that is worn if you want to save the housing. Bratton's has the brass bosses.
