Grinding Transmission case

Hi Guys
I have an early 3 speed transmission fitted with 39 gears that I would like to fit behind my 39 pickup which runs a 59A and 10 inch clutch.
I have read that it is possible to use the early case if you modify it. Has anyone done this with success?
Do you grind the edges off the clutch shaft bush housing or somewhere else too?
Just would like a heads up before I take the existing trans out of my running pickup.

3 places has to be fixed.
both sides by the clutch shaft.
And the upper part of the inspection hole.

I guess it will be trial and error to get the clearance with lots of check fitting to the engine. there cannot be a lot to take off the top as there is not much there, but the bush housings maybe a different story.

Wondering which early case you actually have? See what part number is cast into back of case. 18-xxxx would be a case used in '32-'34, and you probably would need to do some grinding when using a 10" C&PP. If you have a 48-xxxx case, used in '35-'36, the 10" C&PP should clear, and no grinding would be necessary. In fact a 48-xxxx case would have clearance with an 11" C&PP.

Since the casting for the inspectionhole is reaching into the clutch area it must be an 18 style...later 48/78 doesn´t have that and have a radius cut at the clutch shaft support.

This 33 or 34 case was run with a 10" clutch and bears the scars to prove it.

You could check the serial number on the box to see what model year it was associated with.

Anyway, the areas highlighted in green paint are where it hit. There are some closer shots before I put the paint on and one showing the area of the counterweight that was doing the hitting.

It must have made one hell of a racket.

Its an 18 series case which has had the full rebuild. Yes I was planning to swap the gears over to the case that's coming out of my 38 pickup, but I read on this site that you could use the early case with a little grinding work. This sounded like a simple solution to me, so I will give it a go. If it doesn't work I will swap the gears.
