Default 1931 Gas valve removal

Planning on removing the under hood gas valve on my 1931 and polish the seat to stop some seepage. Can I just unscrew it from the engine side or is it necessary for someone to hold it under the gas tank? i.e. a two man job. Thanks

Indented late 31 firewall, one man from the firewall side.

You will need a 3/4" crows foot to get it off and on. The valve screws into a boss, nothing to hold.

You will likely find that late '31 horizontal tube quite encrusted with sediment. It won't simply flush out. I have a scraper made from a cheap extra long screwdriver with the end 1/8" bent over 90 degrees. I got a mountain of crud out from several late 31 tank pipes with it. I followed with a .38 cal bronze bore brush, a thread chaser, and a thorough flush.

I have counter-bored the inlet hole on several late 31 valves to accept a 3/16" brass tube stub that serves as the base for an inlet screen made from 80 mesh bronze screen rolled 1/4"D x 4 1/2"L. It fits easily into a clean '31 tank tube and is much larger in available surface area than the short fuel valve inlet screens sold by the vendors.

Mike. Where did you find the brass screen? McMaster-Carr?
Thanks, Bob

Although I live 15 minutes from the McMaster-Carr warehouse pickup window they do not have 80 mesh, or anything either cheap or with a sufficient % open area. Here's a link to an 80 mesh 6"x6" brass screen piece, 45% open, less than $6 including shipping: LINK That should make several.

I used to take the fine brass screen out of old automatic tranny filters, but with Mike's link, it just isn't worth the time and trouble to do that.
