Default Back up light question

I purchased the following Yankee Bakup light on ebay. Does anyone have any pictures of after market back up light mounted to their cars? Thanks in advance.

What car are you going to put it on? There are myriad ways to mount a backup light; on our '47 Convertible the accessory backup light mounts to the rear "splash pan" under the driver’s side tail light (sorry, no photo) and the switch mounts to the steering column by the shift linkage so it engages the light when you shift into reverse.

You could mount it on the bumper bracket, like 51 MERC-CT did. Looks good (I’d like to put one on our ‘39CS & ‘39LZ), where did you mount the switch?

Anyone that has a floor mounted shift with a backup light installed? If so, how and where did you mount the switch

Ya' that is sort of a dilemma, only way I can see is to mount a switch on dash or column with a warning light to let you know when the backup was on. (so you don't dirve with it on )

I had a light similar to that on my 48 Lincoln that I sold 4 years ago. It had "FORD" stamped in the top of the housing and the lamp was mounted on the gravel shield below the left tail lite. The switch was mounted on the firewall engine side and was activated when you shifted into reverse. Only problem was that if you parked the car in reverse the lite stayed on.

That’s the way I installed the backup light on our '47 convertible, it was a dealer installed option and the switch mounted to the steering column so that when you shifted into reverse the light would come on. I wired it to the ignition switch so it only worked with the ignition on. In cars with floor shifts I guess you would have to hook up a toggle switch and just remember to turn it on and off...

Coolcoupe, there is a bracket that the switch attaches to and the bracket is secured to the steering column (see photo). Please excuse the dirt and grease. I've put 144,000+ miles on our '47 and she is due for a freshening up...

MACs has the mounting bracket and switch listed as '49-'53 but I know for a fact that they fit a '46 and I suspect they'll fit anything with a column shift. FWIW

Years ago, when I installed a back up light on my 47 Merc, I spliced into the tail light wiring to provide the hot lead. That way the only time the backup light came on, is when I was backing up with the lights on.

Vic ,thanks for your time for posting that pic sure makes it easier to mount the switch when I get one!!

TomO, would not the backup light stay on when you had the tail lights on?

With my 35 [floor shifter], I removed the little whelch plug that caps the first/rev shifter rod at the back, and tapped the hole which permitted me to fit a little switch. I sourced the switch from a wreckers yard, it was actually a neutral safety switch out of some Jappa, nice and small. Anyway, when I select reverse, the selector rod pushes directly onto the switch and powers up my rev lite. I can't quite remember, I may have had to slightly shorten up the selector rod to get it all to work, but it works well.

Here's the 42-48 light. The parts book does not list a backup light for the '37.

Here's a nice universal looking fixture that I have seen on vintage cars: (mid 60's VW)

Thanks for all the responses, still hoping a picture of the light mounted on the car, how it was mounted, what kind of bracket, where the wiring was routed.

Sorry I don't have a photo available but the stock Ford accessory backup light has a mounting bracket attached to it (see earlier post that shows drawing from the parts book) The wire from the light goes down through the center of the threaded shaft that the nut go onto to secure the light to the gravel shield (from the under side) the wire gets routed up the driver side frame rail to the switch mounted on the steering column. Not shown in the drawing is the accessory stand (a kind of cone shaped extension that is needed if the light is installed on a car using bumper tips (I need one of those for our '47) as the light is partly obscured by the bumper tip
