Default another strange thing on my 34

I have the oval gas gauge on the dash with 0, 1/2 and F and the liquid filled glastube. Connected to it is a thermal unit that makes the fluid rise in the glastube when I warm the unit. The gauge surely is the original Ford gas gauge so it is useless to use as a temperature gauge. Would like to replace it with a temperature gauge, preferably for both heads.

No thermal unit. The hex shaped tube in the rear is just a storage tank for a very small amount of the red fluid. There should be a very small metal tube attached to the top of the hex tank. The tube runs all the way to the gas tank sending unit and connects to the top of the sender. The sending unit creates a very slight amount of air pressure that goes through the small tube to the hex shaped tank displacing the red fluid in the tank and making the red fluid rise in the glass tube. When the gauges were new, they were shipped and stored with the red fluid inside. There was a plug in the top of the hex tank so the fluid would not spill out. but since the glass tube is open often the fluid cam out that way. In order to work the plug had to be removed, the red fluid added until the gauge just read 0 then the small tube was connected.
Ford did not equipt the car with a temperature gauge as standard. Ford did sell as an accessory a dual fuel temperature gauge which only reads the temperature on one side of the engine, at the radiator hose. (search this web site for info and pictures) The original 34 water pumps did not have a fitting for a temperature gauge.
