7 tooth steering box re-assembly
I am about to re-assemble the 7 tooth steering gear from my 1928 Tudor with new worm and sector and associated bearings.
My question is this: the references I have do not give any empirical clearance or pre-load data for the worm to thrust bearings fit as set by the shims. Is 'tight but not too tight' good enough? Also, are new shims available should I need them? Finally: am I being anal? (Please do not answer this, my wife, children, grandchildren, neighbours and passers-by have already told me.) Thank you in advance. |

Re: 7 tooth steering box re-assembly
I would just remove shims until the end play is gone. At most just the slightest hint of getting tighter, but no real force required to turn the shaft.

Re: 7 tooth steering box re-assembly
Like Tom said. I call it quits when I can feel a slight drag when I turn the shaft with thumb and forefinger.
