Ford Script Battery

I've been searching the internet as well as this forum, without any luck, trying to find someone that is making a Ford script battery case to use on a '36 pickup.

Is there anyone still making a case for use with the Optimally 6v battery?

I'm nearly certain no one sells just the case. There are places that sell the Ford script case with the Optima installed.
However, I don't believe they make one for your '36.
The one they make is for later years and would require you to modify your battery tray.

I believe your pickup uses a Ford Type 40 battery. If so, the original battery case is not tall enough to install a modern optima battery so that's why they aren't available.

It's possible to modify an original Type 40 case to accept an Optima battery while maintaining the top appearance but the bottom of the Optima battery will be below the bottom of the battery case by about 3/8".

Thanks guys. I do understand that the Optima battery is taller than the original type. I have options to make up for the difference, but cannot find a case, original or aftermarket, anywhere. Wasn’t sure if I overlooked someone manufacturing these cases or if they’re not even available any longer.

You could just use the optima until you find a case.

A good used original but dead battery will yield a nice case, so keep your eyes open. I was given an old battery so that's what I used.

You might do a search on Fordbarn. Someone did a DIY install in a original battery case a few months back. That is if you can find a case. They should be available.

You will see a write-up on one way to install a current 6 volt optima into an original Ford Type 40 case. Not saying that anyone else needs to do this, it's just what I did.

The late Nick Casaro was making a suitable Ford script battery case from fiberglass. There may be some remaining inventory in his estate.

Why not both when possible? If I can make a battery appear original and work like a brand new battery, then why not. I know the battery is under the floor, and most people will not see it, but it’s not for them. It’s for me and would make me happy. Going this route doesn’t make the vehicle any more or less usable than yours. It’s simply just for looks. It’s not like I’m going to run a 90 year old battery.

That's exactly why I went to the lengths I did. No one will ever see the battery under the floor inside a battery tray and two sides up against frame rails, but I will know.

That's the reason I like to volunteer to be a judge at any National V8 Club Meet I go to. I don't get joy from picking apart a car, instead I really like to see very well done work by people who care. I typically get volunteered to be the chassis inspector person since I'm still good to go getting down and up so I get to see things like correct battery boxes, factory type mufflers, etc. Where else can you enjoy these things? Probably not at your local car show.


I do understand just keeping one driving, to the untrained eye my 53 looks pretty correct, but there is a lot that has changed from when it left the factory. Most don't notice since the changes aren't performance parts.

I would say offhand that 90% or more of us have changed our cars away from the original in one way or another. And safety is one reason. my standard 36 had no rt side taillight so i put one on. Then i added turn signals. It had no passenger side sun visor. i found one and added it, and so on. I do like to keep it as original as possible though. terry
