Not 100% certain on a 56, but my 55 has the suction side (water pump fitting) routed to the lower hose on the heater core.

Mine wasn't hooked up right either or I could help you out.

Check the heater core for leaks before you hook it up for real.
It's probably the #1 reason they're disconnected.

If as 54 is the same I can send you a picture. Do you have two or four hoses going into the heater core? The 54 has four.

Here's an image (below) for a full sized '56 I found on another site. It doesn't look clear enough to me that it will answer your heater hose placement question but here it is anyway.

This one is a link to a clearer image of a similar setup for a 55/57 T-Bird. It looks to me like the hose from the valve/fitting on the intake manifold is connected to the lower fitting of the heater core.

Most heaters seem to work best if the coolant is going in the bottom and out the top. The control valve should be on the inlet side.

This diagram is for a 55 Fairlane but should help, there are 3 hoses:
1. from top of block to angled input on the heater control valve (on firewall)
2. from straight output on heater control valve to lower input on heater core
3. from upper output on heater core to input on water pump
