I have over $5,000 in my engine that was put together last year. If It would have been ready and available I'm confident at that price I'd be a buyer. Heck, a scatcrankshat alone is like $1,375. I also put in an IB-330 cam. I had a Brumfield head, and 30 lbs flywheel.

Get this, my old engine, the crank snapped, and there was not even a lot of miles on it.

Who’s crank broke on you? I had one break also. I’d like to know where you get a Scat crankshaft for that amount of money. Snyder’s price is $1,700, and if you price one from Scat they want about $500 more. A Scat is 3 main journal, the Burtz kit has 5 main journals with rods and mains insert bearings, all 12 pair are the same for rods and main crank bearings. The Scat crank only has counterweights at the ends and the middle. A Burtz crank has a pair of counterweight next to each connecting rod. I’m sure I’ve spent more on my old original engine than the Burtz Engine Kit.

Good Afternoon Brent Terry...Since you build 'A' engines for a living...and we've seen a couple of estimates on the barn that a completed Burtz engine will end up in the $7,000 to $7,500 range...do you think that these estimates are generally in the ball park? Or do you not feel that you have enough information to form an estimate? Ernie in Arizona

Get this, I sent a crank over that had never been cut. They plainly sent something back (after waiting I might add) that plainly was not "my" crankshaft. All the journals were not even cut the same way. I guess if a Model-A crank is not cut with those little shoulders remaining where the journals meet the bosses it is succeptable to break. Some were, some were not. Not even consistent from one side of a journal to the other side. I never even knew, because I figured I had the work done at the most noteworthy machine shop / antique engine specialist in this part of the united states. Paid the big money figuring I didn't need to check their work.

Was I EVER WRONG! Journals cut wrong. I didn't even ask how much was cut off. Kinda doesn't matter now. And get this. The crank gear had a kneurled sleeve installed on it, before they put a new gear on. I have never even heard of such a thing. As far as the counterwights, (I have the pieces) they look ok. Heck I never even opened the box when I took it to my engine babbit, and assembly man (who had built an engine for me before) Didn't think I needed to given their reputation. I even called over first to ask if they knew what concentric is, and stuff like that. "oh yes", and then got some technical talk. Turns out it was just talk.

I had the counterweighted crank made up and balanced, the flywheel lightened to 30 LBS (which was an exchange part from the get-go, and I agreed to that), the pressure plate was added with the new shoulder bolts I sent and that was balanced as an assembly, then the unit was balanced as the final assembly. All was matchmarked with spray paint, and sent back to me. Then after all that it snapped. Not even 5,000 miles.

I won't tell ya the name of the shop, but I will tell you it is the most name recognizable shop in eastern PA. I thought about sending the pieces back with a letter. Then I thought about sending a letter to the PA state Attorney General. Decided what's the use. I'm sure the shop will say it's my fault, or perhaps my assemblers fault. Yeah right! Evidently I sent it to an amatuer, or worse. I was just sick about it. It's still sitting in the garage. I try not even to look at it.

I have an overdrive on my car. The thing never even turned hard for periods of time.

You can't do everything yourself but anything I can do myself I would rather do. That way if it's screwed up there's no one to blame but me. Just my opinion. I've been burned too many times. Some times over charged and some times just poor workmanship.

Sometimes both.
