Mounting a replacement starter on a Model A

Did the same thing. You can install the starter yourself. The wiring is different. The starter will have diagrams, but they are less than clear.
I installed a remote selonid activated by a turnkey switch, ie, a modern switch available at any auto parts store, with the full acc-off-on-start arrangement. No push button required, the switch does the same thing. Depending on how you set it up, you may not need the remote selonoid. There are a couple of ways to wire it.
Call back to this forum when you get the starter installed and are trying to figure out how to wire it.

The thing is most on the Ford Barn have a stock starter with stock wiring. That makes it difficult to make suggestions once you install a "custom" starter with "custom" wiring because most "custom" setups are not the same. We can't see how your car is wired.

My 6v starter has been converted to 12v by installing 12v field coils but the wiring and foot operated starter switch are original Model A. I have a feeling this is the route you should have followed.

Mill: I think there are misunderstandings creeping into the discussion. Taking a chance here, but no, you will not have to disconnect your regular ignition switch. The current to the ignition/dist is different. You can feed your push button switch off the regular ignition but not recommended. Again, maybe I am misunderstanding the question.

Mine did not come with the foot pedal though it did have the 6v starter. The electrical system had already been converted to 12v.

There is one other choice some have made and that is to have the field coils changed. There is set of coils offered by the parts vendors that makes the starter seem and sound like a 6 volt system. It slows it down similar in speed to the original 6 volt configuration. It takes the bump out of the 12 volt rush. If you do this have the starter shop inspect or replace the bearings and inspect the brush assembly.

As indicated in post #15, I have the gear reduction starter. What I didn't say before is: I use the key switch to activate the starter. The key switch has 4 positions: acc, off, on, start. No separate push button switch.

I used a switch from napa and mounted at the new starter took power for it from the power lug on the starter set it up to use the sarter push rod as original simple to do pm me if you are interested.

Mill48, where are you located? maybe someone is close to you and can help you out. I looked at the Snyder's instructions and the existing wire from the key switch should work.

PC/SR, while I wait for my new starter (due tomorrow), it just dawned on me that with my key ignition, there is a wire going to the coil and distributor. Also, my ammeter and water temp gauges run off the ignition switch. The new starter has a connection to the battery and one to ground. How do I install a push button switch without affecting the coil, distributor and gauges?

Run a wire off the switched side of the switch, the one that is on only when the switch is on, and run a wire to the push button, then on from the push button to the starter. This will operate only when the switch is on.
Another way is to run a separate wire from the hot side of the switch, through the push button. This is always hot, but does not run through the switch.
Are you using the stock switch? I do not know if the stock switch could safely carry the few extra amps for the push button. Someone here would know that. If not, wire it always hot. I have a modern aftermarket switch with the starter connector in the center in the back, run it to a selonid which is wired to the starter. As I recall, you can wire that starter to operate its own selonid.

I remember when Chrysler Corp. introduced the Gear Reduction Starter! LITTLE Kids had to lurn HOW to make a NEW starter sound!

I just took a look at Snyder's website, and they have a simple diagram that may be helpful.

Am I correct that your previous starting procedure was as follows?:

1) Turn the ignition key from OFF to ON.

2) Step on the starter button on the floor.


If so, I think all Snyder's is saying is that the floor mounted starter button will not work with the Gear Reduction Starter. Instead you add a starter button. It should require no modifications to your ignition key switch. As is stock, the ignition key only powers the coil, not the starter.

You can use your starter button in the car with a little modification you can mount a starter switch from napa on top of the new starter and wire the switch directly from the starter lug itself with a fuse for protection.
