Acetone in gas
I just saw something on the I-net I haven't seen before. I know, The myth busters did a show on it eight years an I missed it, or something! Acetone in gas! Using the rate of two ozs per ten gals they supposedly raised gas mileage from mid 20s to thirty MPG. But it only works for the first day, after the first day, it is longer effective. Is this of any real benefit? This sounds like one of those obscure "Fixes" that have been around for a long time, but I somehow missed it.

Re: Acetone in gas
I remember the first time I heard of this about 10 years ago, so I bought some acetone and tried it. My gas mileage had NO change.

Re: Acetone in gas
Don't know about it increasing mileage, but for all you Seafoam users might want to consider a home brew. I have been doing this for years. At 1/10 the price it is the way to go, at least to me, your mileage may vary.

Re: Acetone in gas
Think about it. That's something like 640:1 ratio. I don't think it would have much effect.

also what vehicle was it in? a pickup truck will not see an improvement due to it being about as aerodynamic as a tool shed. Something like 75% of your MPG depends on your foot and aerodynamics of the vehicle.

Re: Acetone in gas
Actually Tolulene is the one to add to improve octane. They Oil companies are adding it to Regular to make premium

The first thing that comes to mind using acetone is those squeaky clean pistons.

Thanks Guys! I thought it was crap! When you hear this stuff you wonder "He can't be the first!" After 100 years of trying everthing from Goose grease to cow magnets we pretty much know what works and what doesn't.

Now where did you ever hear that? My brother is a chemist at a major oil company and he said that was his laugh for the day, month and year! Wayne

Re: Acetone in gas
following this thread reminded me of hearing my dad talk about w w 11 when he was in the navy. gas was rationed and he would run a mixture of kerosene and moth balls just to get around. the kerosene is not too far fetched as a lot of early tractors and flywheel engines were designed torun on kerosene once they were hot. kero was cheaper than gas.

Re: Acetone in gas
Acetone works well for getting water out of gas. I use it in my lawn mover after it has been stored over the winter as it helps to dissolve any gunk that might develop with storage even after adding Stabil when putting it away for winter.

Re: Acetone in gas
Up here in the cold, condensation (water) in the gas tank is a real problem as it can freeze in the gas line. It used to be that in cold weather we would put a few ounces of methyl hydrate in the tank at each fill. Ethanol in the gas seems to have cured the problem. Hooray for crap gas!

Re: Acetone in gas
I heard that if you put gas in the gas tank it worked pretty well. Google it.
