Parts made in USA

I just noticed that my 28 Tudor speedometer, which is original, is stamped Made in USA. I was surprised that a part that age was so stamped. I can't recall any other original part stamped like this. Was foreign parts a problem then or was it for export for some reason?

There were other Ford plants outside the USA such as Canada, England, Denmark and Ireland to name a few.

probably back when a company took pride something was made in USA. Good luck TRULY finding that today.

When I was growing up in the early post WWII years, most companies made the effort to identify the country of origin of their products as a matter of national pride. I remember receiving toys labelled as made in Germany, Made in England, Made in USA, etc. Some would even go as far as to label the city of origin.

It is only in the last while where companies have been exploiting low cost labour markets that country of origin labelling has been muted.

Happily, I have noted an upsurge in such labelling. Many of the parts I buy for my vehicles are clearly labelled as to country of origin. The most surprising? - a clutch throw out bearing carrier labelled "Made in Argentina".

I remember a fuss back in the 1960's when the Japanese named new industrial areas such names as USA, England, Sheffield, Birmingham etc. They wouldn't have been lying if they said a part was made in say, USA but knew that people in the US would read it the way wanted to. Cunning!

I have a lot of old glass car lenses, many of which are stamped Arrow Safety Co. Mt Holly NJ-which happens to be my home town.

About 1961 I was in Hong Kong drinking a bottled coke in the Union Jack Club. As I was a collector of Coke bottles I looked at the bottom of the bottle, where Coca Cola imprinted the manufacturing facility of that particular bottle. There I found my own home town of "Hayward, Calif - USA" .

In the 1930's Yokohama, Japan had a 'manufacturing' plant for Ford Model A's where they assembled the imported cars. I am sure that, as in most foreign plants, they had some smaller component parts made locally, which would not be stamped "USA".

Now isn't there a town in Japan called "USA" and if so the Japanees tried to fool us on that one...or am I mistaken???

If so, then there would be a BIG difference if one saw "Made in USA" and "Made in U.S.A." (United States of America)! Notice that most of the examples above are "U.S.A." and not "USA".

In about 1967 or so, two or three small towns in the "Usa" prefecture (county) merged to become the new City of Usa. You will note that the 'U' is capitalized (as is proper for the first letter of a name) and that the other letters are lower case. As far as I know, the manufacturing districts of Usa do not produce any products that make it to the American market in the U.S.A.
