opinions welcome re: '36 Cabriolet for sale
Guys, I am interested in a 36 cabriolet on eBay. As I don't have time to inspect it personally I was wondering if any of you '36 guru's would look over the photos and advise me of things that may be incorrect or otherwise bothersome.
thanks a bunch! 1936 Ford Deluxe item # 272999874536

As a frame of reference what I would consider a solid 4, 36 Cabriolet with a Columbia sold at No Reserve at the B-J Auction in Scottsdale in 2016 for $38K. I had thought it would go much higher, but it didn’t seem like there was much interest in the car and the crowd was a little thin as it went across the block late morning. Strange that the EBay photos don’t show the engine compartment, they usually do. Its sure a pretty car. Les Williams |

Re: opinions welcome re: '36 Cabriolet for sale
Major issues: that is not a '36 serial number. That is very bothersome. No under the hood or dash pictures. Too many general exterior pictures and not enough detail pictures.
Minor issues: taillights, interior handles and license bracket should not be chrome. Right front pin stripe does not line up. Spiders should not be painted. |

Re: opinions welcome re: '36 Cabriolet for sale
I guess I would verify that the pictures show the car as it is today. The disclaimers would make me a bit cautious. "As is, Where is" you accept any defects etc. While it says it is in Colorado, it has license plates from another state. Could be a flood car.

Re: opinions welcome re: '36 Cabriolet for sale
Guys, thanks a bunch. I have already reconsidered and pulled my bid. After looking closer, with your advice, I have become weary of this one. Plus, I'd just noticed the tag on the keys which in turn made me check the seller out. Obviously a guy who flips cars.
Plus, when I pulled my bid, I noted the only other bid was "hidden". That stinks of a shill big time. Thanks again...

Re: opinions welcome re: '36 Cabriolet for sale
I'm no expert but it looked like the rumble seat lid was twisted. It wasn't seated on the drivers side while the pass side looked ok. As mentioned, the pinstripe on the passenger side grill wasn't aligned and the hood to grill gap was way off. Through the grill, it looks like a shiny new (maybe aluminum) radiator. Personally, I wouldn't spend that kind of money without actually laying eyes on it or, at least, having someone you trust laying eyes on it.

Re: opinions welcome re: '36 Cabriolet for sale
My previous post was based on just looking at the pictures. I just read the description. "Every Nut, Bolt, and Fastener Has Been Restored to Factory Specifications in Order to Attain the Highest Possible Judging Points." The screwed up rumble lid, the wiper that looks like it's falling off and the hood to grill fitment...etc. Nice looking car but I think the description is misleading.

Re: opinions welcome re: '36 Cabriolet for sale
GOOD NEWS
Mike and other Fordbarners, That car sold for $29,000, April 15, 2016 at the Houston Mecum Auction. Maybe it was a "flood car" as that price seems low. https://www.mecum.com/lots/HA0416-24...ord-cabriolet/ You definitely made the right decision. Looks like someone is "bidding it up" on a regular basis. It's a Mecum Auction car that seller is 'flipping". No photos of under carriage or engine is problematic for such an allegedly highly restored car. Would be interesting to do a search and find what Mecum auction it was sold at and for how much. Glad you didn't get burned. Found it. Same car was offered at Mecum Auction in Houston, April 14-16 in 2016. https://www.mecum.com/lots/HA0416-24...ord-cabriolet/ Last edited by 19Fordy; 01-01-2018 at 10:58 AM. |

The engine in it looks to be a 21 stud 1937 vintage....

a couple more things to add to V8ers notes:
Luggage racks were not available on cabriolets, coupes or roadsters Leather interior appears to be early style..not correct for wood grained dash era Wipers seem disconnected and not in tandum |

And, since I believe such things are important to you, the top is the wrong color in terms of authenticity.

Read his disclaimer in the description. Its clear that if you buy it you "eat it".The inaccuracy of descriptions of parts and cars abound on EBAY.

It looks like you did good to steer clear of this one. He must have been hiding a lot without showing the engine and under the car. |

I agree. He told me a number of days ago that he would send photos of both. that didn't happen. He told me he bought the car from his partner. I now am guessing his "partner" is Dana Mecum

Kube: Just curious.
Did the seller give you any indication of what his selling price was? |
